Hey all.
Looking to build a new gaming rig from scratch.
Want this PC to last me as long as my last PC.

Only using for gaming, Web browsing, media.

My last rig has done me well for almost 6 years.
It's an i5 750 paired with a gigabyte p55 ud5.

I have a
1440p Monitor,
Keyboard,
Mouse,
Gtx 1080 Zotac amp extreme

Heres my list.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £2,224.83
(includes shipping: £91.04)

Any thoughts?
Any price savings?

  • Have swapped the CPU cooler to one with a 6 year warranty (instead of 3 for the AIOs) that performs similar thermally to these 240mm AIO but is usually quieter and can't leak fluid (very unlikely, but can happen)
  • Motherboard swapped to a cheaper version, whilst maintaining or improving upon overclocking abilities and in some other areas. You do lose some RGB though.
  • Have saved a bit on the RAM, you start getting diminishing returns past 3200mhz RAM. Also, low CAS timings at lower mhz can often beat higher mhz and latencies.
  • 650w PSU is plenty even for a 1080ti + 8700k. That Seasonic unit is reviewed very well and has a 10 year warranty.
The case is the most subjective choice here in my opinion. If you did choose a windowed case, the brown Noctua fans might not look good, so an AIO could be used instead.

It's a very nice system.

Do you not like 140mm fans? That's a case that has/can take 140s, and BeQuiet 280mm.

Question mark about the 500GB M.2 given the purposes of the system. Would imagine the 850 Evo is for games? So what's all the 500GB in the M.2 for? Could easily go with 250GB there, and save a hundred.

The case has a PSU shroud to hide the cables so you could just get 4 extensions for £20 (OcUK would even throw them in for free given you're spending a tidy sum), the only power cables that will be in view (24pin ATX, 8pin EPS, 2 x 6+2pin PCIe). So can save £82 there.

650W would be ample for Coffee Lake and a 1080Ti, save about £30 there if you want. Look at Seasonic's offerings with 10 year warranty as well. If going EVGA, then go with newer G3 model unless you don't want those for some reason.

I've made some reasonable savings with the build above. Thoughts?

Yes, good savings there already, subject to aesthetic preference, case etc.

8-Pack did say the 3600MHz CAS 16 is even sweeter than 3200MHz CAS 14 but also that there's hardly anything in it, so £30 saved for no noticeable loss I would agree with.

I've read about some air flow concerns in that Phanteks case, particularly if you mount an AIO at the top. The case looks amazing, but temperatures could be an issue. Certainly won't help system longevity, especially if the OP wants to keep this PC for 6+ years

Check these extensions out if you're going for black/metal look. Like I said, all you have to do is call or contact through webnote/Customer Service forum and ask if they can be added for free, if you're spending a lot. Staff have mentioned they will do that (did it for me once).

They include cable combs too.

Yes. There's a remedy for that:

1. When it comes to the top mounted radiators... make sure that you block off all unused airspaces on the mounting tray to prevent hot air exhaust from recirculating back in the top of the case.

Killer system, would get the silent 280 !
And the Aorus 7 has best Audio out all all the z370 boards for Asus ROG x399 zenith !
Plus you can look around at the support Gigabyte reps offer here compared to anyone else. Along with UK repair center :)
The silent wing fans are something else as well ! You'll find you'll just run them at 80% all the time and hear nothing yet you'll feeling the pressure and airflow of the things !

And damn the halo covers look good

Only 1 year warranty on the cpu but it is pre-binned and de-lidded (And in stock). You might have a bit of a wait for the standard retail chips.

The 1TB 960 EVO works out a bit cheaper than a 500GB 960 EVO/850 EVO combo.

Solid psu with a 12 year warranty.

Case is personal pref. The Enthoo Pro M Special Edition has a White interior and front RGB LED fans. It should have much better airflow than the Evolv.

I would sell it or keep it as a spare. The Corsair H115i is better.

I've just ordered a build using the Gaming7 board and stuck with that AIO, couldn't find any reviews that said it was pants...is it a bad choice? I run a corsair AIO in my current PC, just wondering how you rank them?

Not saying it is a bad cooler, but for an i7 8700K I would want a beefier rad as they run hot. Of course the cpu above has been de-lidded so it will run cooler. I could only find one review in English for a CoolerMaster AIO and one in Dutch. This isn't the 'Lite' version though AFAIK.

The Dutch review shows temps compared to an NZXT X61/X62 and BeQuiet SilentLoop 280 which are all 280mm coolers (Like the H115i) and they perform better than the Coolermaster on an overclocked i7 7700K at 4.5GHz. Obviously pushing higher will create even more heat.

I would use it if it was free and I didn't have the budget for a cooler. As the op has a healthy budget then I would go with a 280mm or even 360mm such as the BeQuiet Silent Loop 360.

Get rid of the Windows 10 for 100 quid, you can get it for a fraction of that price from dedicated key sites. Give you 100 quid more on hardware.

Not sure what else he could spend an extra £100 on as he already has the monitor, mouse/keyboard and gpu. He could use Windows 10 without activating it but you can't personalise it.

His point being, paying £100 for windows is ridiculous when you can get full versions for £5-£20 depending on how hard you look.

Depends if the op wants to go down that route. Even though those sites sell it a lot cheaper there is still a risk that it might get deactivated by Microsoft if it turns out to be a stolen key etc. If he wanted to save the £100 then I would just use it without activating it.
