Why is it some people just can't stand being overtaken and always have to Blow their horn, flash their lights, jester at you?

Ticks me off, all I want to do is get past you because you hold me up in the twisties when I want a more entertaining drive than staring at the back of your stupid 4x4 slowing to a crawl to take even the slightest bend!

This moring I over took some old bloke in a Honda CRV, in a perfectly safe overtaking manouver, good visability, no on coming traffic, just shot past in no time at all. Look in my rear view mirror, and he is aplauding me for what ever reason, makes him feel big or whatever.

Today had a twist, while he was doing that he lost control went onto a verge, on the other side of which is a ditch and had to quickly grab the wheel back to regain control.

What a flaming numpty.

i got an always getting passed, doesent bother me one bit. Only thing is some people steam past in 30 zones then stay under 40 on NSL roads

I get it all the time in my Z4, I only ever overtake where it is safe to do so but you still get people flashing/gesturing at you!

Went past a MGF who had his hood down yesterday and it was pretty obvious there was a complete lack of attention as I nearly frightened her off the road.

NSL roads are the worst, people always seem to want to do 35MPH!

Know what you mean mate. Always remember when I was growing up my Dad going along at about 50 everywhere, then getting ****** off when someone overtook him. Weird!

I get this daily, an average drive to work will see a minimum of 6 or so overtakes on the counrty roads leading to the M6, at least 2 people generally get uppity about being passed.

I don't personally understand the mentality of not wanting to be overtaken, surely if i'm going quicker than you then i'm not exactly going to be holding you up am I?

 @ numpties

I get this all them time. Grew up on an NSL road and there are plenty of idiots about.

On friday some idiot in a Porsche managed to hit both sides of the road in his Carrera while I was walking the dogs. He just sat there with oil pouring out the car, waiting for a tow. I think is baby makers had shrivelled quite a bit at that point :D

I overtook a 4x4 the other day which I left for dead as it was going 20mph, he gave it the whole hoo har etc then seconds later a bike came past on the back wheel as he came off the corner doing over a ton and lest us both for dead. That shut him up! I miss my bike.

What really gets me is people who think they're going fast who swing onto the opposite side of the road before a corner then steer shaprly into it. Then there's the old women in Mercs coming the other way at 20mph down the middle of the white line. Sometimes I wish I had a HGV.

Yeah living down country roads I experience this all the time. Most commonly at night when they just leave full beam on. Just flick my rear view mirror up and get on with it. I don't understand why you would get the hump from someone else passing you though? Oh the shame :p

Yeah Ive met these low lifes too.

I normally overtake because they are doing 38mph in a 60mph or something like that.

For some reason they want you to stay behind so they can slow you down and make you late for work.

Because in their own mind everyone is the perfect driver who travels at the optimum speed for making progress whilst maintaining a suitable margin of safety. Therefore anyone who wants to go faster than them is a child killing lunatic and anyone who wants to go slower is a liability and shouldn't be allowed on the road if they can't keep up with everyone else.

Ah, glad to know its not just me then LOL.

I don't understand the mentality myself, especially when they are "crawling" along at 40 in an NSL (and then subsequently 40 through the 30). You make a perfectly legal and safe manouver and they get all upity about it

Anyone here want to own up and enlighten us on the why they do it? Would be genuinely interested to hear the opposite school of thought on it for sure.

Hi there

Gotta say I don't get this problem. :)

In fact people tend to move over as far as they possibly can giving me plenty of room and as such I reward them with a drop to 2nd or 3rd pass and shoot off very quickly.

Only the other day I'd been following a chap in a BMW through some N/S roads and when we came to traffic lights he gave up the BMW overtaking lane to me just to say how ace he thought the car sounded, then I was off again. :D

Only dual carriage ways that do my head in, most people will move over wheras others just don't seem to understand that the right hand lane is for overtaking and just to just stay in when the left hand lane is empty. Generally I don't get people jesturing at me for overtaking them, but maybe its because by the time they have realised what just happened I am already out of their vision. ;)

Well, the kind of vehicle you use does seem to have quite a large effect on other people's attitudes towards you, and their behaviour. In my Volvo 850 people tend to take more risks assuming that I don't know how to use the accelerator pedal (yes it does have one ;)), and a few times people have taken very excessive risks to get past me, even when I'm driving at the speed limit. These days I just ease off a bit - no need to make an accident even more likely - and let it go. A flash of the lights isn't suddenly going to change people's attitude to driving.

Needless to say I rarely have this problem on my beemer (K75 RT).

What annoys me more is when I am driving along on the dual carriageway at 70 and everyone overtakes me anyway....must be something wrong with my speedometer? Or does everyone else just speed? :D

Probably both :p

In the car I dont really overtake much anyway - a 1.6 has that effect lol.

On the bike I find the opposite - some cars almost chuck theselves into a hedge to let me pass, even if its a blind bend I'm out for a gentle ride and happy to sit in traffic. Then I feel guilty if I dont overtake :/ Its nice when cars pull to the left to let me filter by in slow moving town traffic, and I always try to acknowledge them with a wave, but on an A road I wish they would just drive normally - I'll pass when I'm ready.

I had some idiot do this to me the other day, obviously it was different to how the OP has done his maneuver. But I was overtaken on a NSL stretch of road. Was it safe to do so? Nope, the fella had to cut back in front of me. Oh ok then, I must have been going slow. Nope, bang on 60mph. Clearly, the audi driver was just stupid and in a hurry. Did it to the car in front further down the road as well, nearly getting whacked by an oncoming car.

Needless to say, he got a flash from me for doing that!!!

As said, why does this annoy you? Its their choice as to what speed they wish to do..

The worst thing is when people expect me to break the speed limit on dual carriageways when I am overtaking a long line of lorries so they can carry on doing their 90mph. I don't have any of it. Its so tempting to brake test them. Thing is I dont want to end up in a ditch.

I hope you don't just pull out in front of cars doing 90+.

If they catch you up however then its their problem.
