Overtaking

Had exactly the same thing just now - normal A road, guy in front in a regular Golf, I knew he probably wasn't going to have the same idea of making progress as I was, so I waited until the NSL sign where he began accelerating up from 30 and I nipped past him, in complete safety.

I had a rear view mirror of full beam, several times.
 
I just experienced the whole 'flashing' thing for the first time.

Stuck behind a Punto doing 28 in a 40 and no opportunity to overtake, we got back into the 30 and to a set of traffic lights.

Turning right down to another 40 road, the Punto showed no signs of doing the limit. I had to sit behind it for a bit as there was a blind bend that I had no intentions of overtaking on (I've had drivers coming towards me overtaking around this bend on my side of the road before now... idiots). So, as soon as we got onto the straights, I started my overtake.

I was about 1/2 way through the overtake when I spot a Golf a good way up the road. Safely pull in front of the Punto (it wasn't even a fast overtake, I was in 3rd) with plenty of time to spare. 5 seconds later, the Golf is just about to pass me and gives me a blast of his main beam.

What's the point, really :rolleyes:
 
Meh, you get used to it.

I rarely get anyone tailgating me, but when they do I gently slowdown to a crawl then floor it - another couple of times and they get the point.

My personal favourite however is someone tailgating on a dual carriageway in traffic.. Once a gap appears its bye bye time :D
 
Had this earlier on in the year woman doing 35-40 in a 60 in a ford KA and i'm stuck behind her in my dads 2.0 Volvo 940 Estate which is pretty sluggish, i go to overtake her after being stuck behind her for about 5 mins & she decides to floor it as i'm half way past her.

Think when i finally managed to pull back in i was doing about 75 - 80MPh.

But after i managed to pull in she slowed right down again & the car that was behind me ended up overtaking her too :confused: .
 
I've had all sorts:

People in faster cars driving slowly who put their foot down as you pull alongside to stop you overtaking.

People who put their lights on full beam and blind you after overtaking.

One guy last year coming the other way during an overtake. The straight is half a mile long, I pulled out to overtake, passed the car. He flashed at me numerous times during the 10 full seconds (I counted) I was safely back on my own side of the road before he passed me, whereupon he waved his finger in a "tutting" style at me.

And the man in the Saab 95 in Cornwall 3 years ago took the biscuit. Doing 55 in a 60 late at night, I go to pass. He actually swerved into my path as I was moving alongside, forcing me half up into the grass/mud verge at 70mph.

After staying strangely calm as I slid off the slippery verge at 60ish, back onto the road again and regained proper control, I went mad, and were it not for the fact that I was by myself in the car, I would have stopped blocking the road to take his number and ask what the heck he was playing at, before reporting him to the police for dangerous driving. I was by myself unfortunately, and given his actions so far didn't want to be in a person to person situation with him, so I scarpered and put it down to experience.
 
I'm lucky enough to drive 90 miles each day on some of the north east's best twisty's (and I love it:D), be it on the bike or car it bug's the hell out of me getting stuck behind someone who thinks 25-40 is a safe speed for a NSL road in good conditions. The one that sticks in my mind was back in my Learner 125 days, I overtook a car as it was doing 55-60 in the inside lane on a dual c/way, they sped up, moved out and overtook me again then slowed to 55-60 again. I moved out again and they sped up. I gave up & dropped back in. We got into the twisty's and it was a different story... I realised they couldn't corner for love nor money and went past with no agro.

Some people have issue with being overtaken by learners or car's they feel are inferior. That along with idiots who think no lights (at all!) on foggy mornings are a good idea, or idiots who sit on your rear bumper (especially in 30 zones it's 30 ffs i'm not going to speed up even if you start pushing my rear bumper! - I am more inclined to brake sharply and make a claim against you), while i'm at it people who don't do lifesavers before turning be it on a bike or in a car.

Slightly OT but am I the only one who'd be in favor of 5 year re-tests for everyone ? Genuinely good drivers get discounted insurance, bad ones are required to do additional refresher lessons till they meet the standard. I'd be happy to pay £50 every 5 years to know that I (and everyone else on the road) had at least undergone some form of independent examination in the last few years.
 
I'm in favor of everyone having to do a day course every 5 years or so.
I had to do a driver improvement course and it was really interesting. Was nice to have a refresher and an instructor telling me where i had made bad habits.
People like my housemate and my sister need these courses so that they dont scare the crap out of me when they brake right near to the car in front.
 
The worst overtake i have seen is in 30 zones. I am sticking to 30 On my Fazer through town and in a town i sometimes pass through to go to college there is a long stretch of 30 before hitting the national speed limit, about 30 feet from the national speed limit they just speed up and try to overtake anything abiding the law.
 
It happens all the time sadly. The worst ones are the people who speed up as you go past as suddenly you are not going to get past or the distance to the turn/next car is greatly reduced. It used to be a problem in my old car with less power but no where near as bad now!
 
I would say that 80% of the time I have over taken in a NSL single carriageway I have had either the person I overtake flash or try to keep up or the person that is miles away coming from the other direction flash their lights as they get near :confused:

Many people just seem to think you shouldnt overtake on a single carriageway and are happy to sit stuck behind something @40mph for mile after mile when the limit is 60.

I never get annoyed though just chuckle that they are idiotic enough to think I have done something silly or against the law. The whole speed kills campaign probably doesnt help this situation as I tend to think most people as soon as they see an overtaking car straight away assume that it is breaking the limit thus try to take the law into their own hands telling you to slow down by flashing or whatever. IDIOTS all of them!!
 
One of my friends who I will never get back in the car in since that experience, had the same thing. Safe overtake, but as he was pulling back in the guy he overtook put his foot down so by the time we were back in the correct lane he literally was inches from the bumper - lights flashing, hooting etc.... My friend stupidly decide to show him his brake lights and the other guy threw the anchors out - my friend then slowed and came to a stop and got out of his car. There was an exchange of words (this "friend" is 19stone, 6'3" and looks very intimidating) a bit of pushing about - mainly by my "friend" I'm ashamed to say. Needless to say the other guy was a petrified - but it was such a stupid way to behave by both of them. I've never got back in the car with him since then - he's got such a volatile temper I just hope he doesn't hurt anyone.

Some people really do suffer from ego issues. It's frankly rather sad and pathetic.

I must say I tend to overtake people even if they are doing 60 :o

Today, i overtook a car at 60mph and he went nuts. He was right on my tail all the way to college, and it turns out hes a lecturer, not one of mine though :p
The overtake wasnt dangerous either.

Why do people hate it soo much though?
