Overwatch

Placements done. 6 wins, 3 losses and a draw.

Last season I was around 2200-2300... this season 1887... :(

Two narrow, fun wins last night. Completely night and day difference to my Sunday games. People chatting, working together, coordinating picks, praising good play (even on the enemy team). Crazy difference. That makes it 5 losses, 4 wins, 1 still to play.

3 wins last night, including an absolute nail-biter on Anubis where we took the second point to win in the last 10 seconds after 7 minutes of trying and not quite getting there...

Still on 100.0% win-rate as Pharah this season, and #437 Pharah on overbuff (though it's only counting players who have placed I think, so at the moment it's not out of a huge number - still nice to see though!)

Pharah seems so hard to be consistent with. I might need to put some QP time in on her and see if I can improve my prediction.

The 1v1 matches I have, pharah seems to just be a flay-about-spamming fest. I try and use the E to bounce enemies near walls so I can get splash damage, but it still seems to come down to who gets a lucky direct hit first.

Got any tips?

My close wins from a couple days ago -

I think I panicked a little in the first one and probably should have done better. My heart was pounding! Adrenalin flowing!

In 1v1 or in actual games? Rocket prediction I think is just a judgement thing that you get better at over time... I played tons of Quake + Unreal, and more recently TF2 Soldier and Tribes... Practice practice practice, always try to go for direct hits rather than relying on splash damage. You don't have to blast out rockets as fast as possible - sometimes it's better to hold on a fraction longer to line things up, plus by varying how fast you fire you make it harder for enemies to predict when the next rocket is coming...

With Soldier being about a lot at the moment some games you'll just have to give up and switch, but you can survive against him and other hitscan heroes with good positioning - it depends a little on the map but you can usually take advantage of scenery and corners + your ability to near-hover to get sight on a choke or similar without being in line-of sight to get picked off... If they do start hitting you immediately kill boosters and fall as fast as possible, if you're falling a long distance use your concussion blast on some scenery near to you to add a sudden sideways move as a good hitscan player will pick you off as you fall...

On the subject of the concussion blast - get used to using it to move yourself very quickly out of the way - especially when you hear Soldier's Ult activate, Dva ult, Mei ult, etc. or even just when you're low and need to get out of the way to a health pack or similar... That and the other use for it (besides knocking people into pits of course) is as a sort of zoning tool - if their Rein has his shield up with others shooting from behind a well aimed blast will scatter them all - you can similarly use it with teamwork to bounce an enemy player forward out of position to get focussed by the team (this works particularly well on Mei + Zarya who tend to play towards the front when defending)...

There's a few tips off the top of my head! One more - remember with the jump jet buff you can now more viably hide from fire over the edge of pits and things without being at as much risk of running out of fuel - plus you can often pop up out of nowhere with an ult or similar

Edit: (Forgot about 1v1)... fighting other Pharah's in the air is tricky - it's just prediction again but with the target having more difficult movement - I think the easiest way to get it at first (and to be honest I don't feel I'm quite there yet either) is to momentarily try and sync at least one of your movement directions with hers just before firing, and then don't lead in that direction... Either that of just focus on dodging and be ready to land shots as they get lower to the ground... (In a normal game though if your team has a Pharah counter it's generally better to let them deal with her; you can waste a lot of time trying otherwise whilst not helping the team!)

Ended up ~2250ish, up to 2300 in a three matches (win, win, draw).

Those matches seem to indicate I'm at the level where a 1-healer team can win. I played Ana in both, with no other healer and we won El Dorado 3-2 twice in a row.

The draw was odd. It was Hanamura, and neither team capped the first point(!). We stopped them even entering the courtyard, but then couldn't put enough pressure on to get it more than 25% capped on our team. A very intense but oddly low consequences game.

Doesn't matter what you do sometimes - great numbers as D Va on lijong towers - lost 3-1 because one player decided to player as Torb the whole time for 4 rounds.

You are the only tank on that team, and not a particularly great one for defending your team except for occasional scenarios. Your team also doesn't have the damage to really get through reins shield. That would have been rough.

Also... I too have been placed disheartening low haha. Going to try and battle my way up, BUT I'm very interested in learning whether Sombra can be taken into comp... this would probably **** off my team mates though!

Had some decent games last night. I've started using characters out of my comfort zone, Zarya being one. I find her utility so useful and the Ultimate can be devastating when combined with others. Completely shut down an opposing Phara who was dominating our team as well. Changed from Rein to Roadhog - we were dealing with their other picks okay but the Phara kept nailing us... until captain hook came out! That's one of the reasons I really enjoy this game; if you're getting shut down by a character you have options to counter.

Still loving this, but not loving the 'meta' fanbois who cry when I pick Widow (my main, only play when I fancy some fun, will rarely use in a serious match) or what ever doesn't fit their meta BS.

It makes no sense! Why moan about this stuff in arcade 6v6???? I really hope this doesn't become a LoL type of game where you HAVE to pick what ever works for the popular meta BS. Which is just that, a load of BS for fanbois of streamers to feel like their in MLG or something.

Utterly stupid.

I'd be wary of torb/widow 'mains' in comp.

But in QP or arcade/brawl? You play what's fun. Ignore those complainers (so long as you're not actually hurting the team, is the obvious caveat).

Oh 100%, in comp or even normal quick play, I'll always pick what fits for the team (comp a bit more seriously than quick play).

Widow can be VERY powerful at breaking up team waves and reducing the pushing power of a team. And is fairly decent at weakening defences. But there are better picks in most situations. If my Widow pick doesn't work, I'll change up.

But arcade, seriously. I just hope people stop with the META **** outside of comp.

If people play 6v6 unlimited, then they need to expect they might be 5 widows and a symmetra on attack :D

I've had people complain about my picks in the random heroes mode. Seriously. Not in jest. Not ironically. Actually complaining that I didn't suicide until I got their preferred hero.

Actual wow! That makes me cringe lol

I've gone 8-16 these last two days, maybe this is my level but I'm about done now if it is, at least I know the importance of having tanks and healers as well as DPS, it's pretty much gg when 4 people pick dps.

I've had a rough time of it the last couple of nights as well (and Wednesday when I had the day off and put in about 20 games)... the 100% Pharah win rate days are over!!!

It's interesting though how much more the losses stick in your mind... on Wednesday it felt like I was losing every game but when I checked overbuff in the evening it turned out I'd won 8, drew 2 and lost 10 out of 20... and for all that had probably dropped ~80 SR, which isn't too bad... Have gone on to fall a bit further last night but at least most of the games aren't too one-sided...

I played with some guys on my friends list yesterday who are higher ranked than me. We were in ~2600 average matches (I'm ~2400).

You know those days where you just feel on-form, like you can't miss, you can second-guess the enemies etc? It was one of those days.

Several people on my team and a couple of the enemies called me out in a positive way for my Ana play. One of them checked my rank and couldn't believe I was gold. In one KotH match I slept charging rein (twice) within ~5 feet of a wall, slept a winston so he fell down a hole, and slept an ulting genji mid dash. Felt good. Still hate King of the Hill maps so very much. I don't think I've ever won a game on the Ilios map with the sunken cap point.

I've been playing this for about a month, and I really like it, but I feel like I'm missing something.

I'm what you might call an older gamer (CS used to be my thing, way back), and I've never played class based games such as Team Fortress. Google has helped me understand that DPS means Damage per second, and Meta means a best team selection :)

I've had a go at the competitive thing, and I've won a couple, but my character choices seem to raise eyebrows - I just look at what the game says the team needs (no tank or healer most of the time) and pick accordingly. I tend to try to be Symmetra on defence, and Pharah or Roadhog on attack. If a healer is needed, I go for Lucio.

Having seen the effect a badly balanced team has (guaranteed loss), I want to understand a bit more. Is it normal to join a team or clan of some kind in this game? I feel like I'm missing out on lots of experience and knowledge and there doesn't seem to be any communication other than trash talk, and I'm not really getting a 'community' feeling about it all. I'm not wanting to be competitive, just would be nice to share a bit of chat and fun and learn some more without being called a n00b for asking :D
