Overwatch

Really liking Tracer at the moment; learning new ways of playing her and it seems to be working. Did they speed the game up slightly during a previous update?

Finished my placements with two losses. One was a heartbreaker, every round went to OT and we lost 2-3. So, 5 and 5 with two washouts due to leavers, not too bad. Ranked 2015, which makes sense. I was between 1900 and 2400 last season and it drops us 100 or so from the season before. Probably where I should be.

Been there myself numerous times, know how you feel...

In general and I know this might be controversial to say but to me it seems like the thing that has helped me to do better lately is - mute the voice chat! Honestly, I do understand the value of callouts and communication but I'm almost always with a group in discord who are communicating anyway, and in 99.9% of games the only thing people seem to use their mic's for is to curse their team-mates, tell people what to do, criticise their every move. For whatever reason I just can't tolerate it... get mega tilted when I know things aren't going great and some twerp starts moaning on at me (and believe me, I know when I'm playing bad, or when I need to switch, when we're not grouping or focusing etc. I don't need to be told)...

Since I muted the chat completely I feel happier and play better, even in the bad games... to those getting frustrated I say - try it!

Same. I win a lot more when I turn off text and voice chat. People's "comms" are 95% useless. The only words that need to be spoke is "going in now", and even then it's only a useful call if you're flanking and don't have LOS on your teammates.

I occasionally question my decision... had a placement game the other day and in text chat a guy was saying "guys please can you join comms"... So I decided to give it a chance and joined... said hello, and made callouts etc. (I was Winston and was trying to give people notice on who I was planning to dive and the like)... the others in my group communicated also, but the randoms in the game (including the guy who asked to join comms) said absolutely nothing after the initial hello... I don't know if they were responding to our callouts appropriately or not, but we weren't doing good with focusing etc. and that suggests to me that they weren't...

About halfway into the round and after several failed attempts to take the point that random guy finally pipes up and for the remainder of the round "ffs, another loss"... "what are you guys doing?"... "why weren't you healing me?"... "where were the heals?"... "this bronze 3-stack"... "thanks for the loss"... "you guys are so bad"...

So after that game I switched voice back off again and have continued in blissful ignorance - it hasn't and I bet won't be a problem in the future either... In my opinion "guys joing comms" is basically the same as "can we group up"... it's just become a totally vapid meaningless expression that a large majority of the playerbase are under the delusion that you just need to say to your team-mates to win (we've all seen the players insisting that we "group" as they're clearly running off towards the point solo)

Has anyone noticed slight lag since the anniversary update? I normally have a 30-odd ping and use powerline ethernet, but I swear I've got a delay on some things, like Mei's ice wall from when I hear the sound and it actually coming out.

I haven't noticed anything

I have, find some games I'm leading my shots to get hits. This isn't in a game changing way but noticeable. The major thing I've really noticed (probably due to the country of some players) is being killed round corners. This is even more annoying for Hanzo mains !

3 wins out of 3 games. Quick session tonight, listened to the advice of others (on here and Reddit), only played my mains and shut off audio comms. SO much more enjoyable. Even as we were struggling in the second game. Only switched from Widow once which was when we were defending and the enemy teams progress was too much to snipe upon so went Mei.

Got POTG as Widow and had my team tell me gj and all sorts :D So kind of a good moment for Widow players that you can be appreciated!

Yeah most people on voice chat will cry all game for people to switch character, they would rather you play soldier and get 0 kills than widow and get 50.

If I go game chat it will just be 30 mins of people crying about character choices or shouting how bad each other are it doesn't help at all listening to it.

If I play with friends we will be communicating all game calling out enemies and using our ults together etc...

Most the time now I don't bother with voice chat unless playing with friends.

It is quite unreal how serious and how far people take gaming. I mean it is just a bloomin game.

I've not heard anyone speak on comms yet. Done 4 placements so far after hitting 25. Eerily quiet.

Some people (I'm one of them) are very competitive. I don't know why I shouldn't take a comp match seriously. Why does it being a game mean you shouldn't?

Football is a game, do you know how seriously that gets taken? Have you seen the money involved?

It's funny isn't it, arguments about team play aside, I simply wouldn't enjoy playing like that. If I don't have people on I can play with and chat, I don't bother playing.

It's a shame... I do think that in many shooters having some fun and banter with people on the server is a very real part of what can make the experience fun, this just seems to have disappeared from a lot of modern games; you get all of the trash-talk and moaning but virtually none of the silliness and messing around...

4 placements in I have not experienced any voice comms in Overwatch but in CS:GO, the problem was being ranked with non-english speaking cultures or other countries at times the younger generation are up playing. I was rarely put with British players, but when I was the team play was fantastic in comparison.

Hopefully will get some decent team play in OW once ranked. Looking forward. Had some great close games so far :)

So what I do, and what I would suggest is

Start every game with comms on, if it turns sour, mute the toxic person, dont leave chat......you can mute individuals, please remember that. Don't assume everyone is toxic. There is a real difference between someone 'suggesting' changes and someone being toxic and demanding people swap.

e.g. If your Ana (let's assume you're running 1 healer in this example) says "can insert non-tank switch to hitscan to deal with pharah maybe?" then that's fine, and if they dont swap to counter a threat they are either idiots or throwing. If someone says "oh god fkin switch widow garbage pick" then that's toxic.

The other problem is, some people like to shout toxic but they are actually playing like garbage and should switch, they are just too tilted to realise. Winston keeps jumping in alone vs a reaper and a hog and won't swap cause winston main! idiot. 1 tricks are as bad as throwers. Mercy main keeps getting dived and killed no matter what you do to save them? idiot.

The other thing I tried, and I have to thank Valkia's stream for this, was playing on the Americas servers. my recent experience on EU has been nothing but toxic russians after 10pm, I don't know if it's my rank (struggling to maintain 3650) or just bad luck, but jesus every other game has had some crazy russian yelling at people. So i switched to Americas. Out of 50 games I've had maybe 1 with a toxic person or a thrower, the voice comms are used more, and I've actually made some good Overwatch friends there. my win rate hasn't changed much, but when we have lost no one is shouting or blaming people. Downside ? The 80-100ms ping but I just don't play hitscan there.

It's good in theory, but speaking for myself here - I am not disciplined enough to do that... Despite trying to do exactly this I find I don't end up bothering to go into the voice menu and mute someone... it's easier to just not have the decision to make in the first place - as well as the fact that even the start of the irritating toxicity can be enough to throw you off your game (maybe only slightly, but it's a slippery slope!)

Well the solution to that is; learn to be aware of what's going on yourself so that you don't need to be told by someone... I know it doesn't apply to everyone but I know when what I'm doing is working or not, and I make switches as appropriate to either counter what the enemy are doing or to reinforce what my team are trying to do. Nothing more irritating than people thinking they know better and trying to dictate your every action...

Although I haven't been playing on NA lately I do think this can be true - but I think the main reason why it is sometimes better is the time-of-day difference; the times where it's very bad/inconsistent in EU (say around the typical "after school" hours) are usually better in NA (but the reverse can be true as well at other times)

Yea, the game where I got PoTG, they were typing in chat the usuals... "Widow, really?", "Widow, go junk" etc etc. Half way into the first round, they shut up and by the end, they were telling me good job and well played... Really reinforced the mindset that if I do well, people will cotton on and just accept my hero choice. And like I said, if my choice doesn't fit, I'll pick either of my other 2 mains. Mei or Zen if people REFUSE to heal.

So you're saying you are aware of every counter / combination in OW and would never listen to advice / ideas ? That's a bad attitude. I've had some really useful suggestions given to the team and me personally during a game which have made a big difference. E.g. guy has obviously checked my profile and say's "hey, what if you went Zarya ( I play a lot of Zarya) and I will swap to winston so we can coord with our genji to dive their supports quicker" Now this guy was on to something here, I was playing DVA to counter their pharah because we didn't have a hitscan and their pharah wasn't amazing but still needed voiding. But we weren't making much progress in team fights. So next round we swapped up like he suggested, managed to nuke their supports easier and steamrolled the next 2 rounds.

I'm not saying that happens every game, but you're never going to get those good comms if you assume everyone is an ******* before the game starts. Maybe its different at your rank, I don't know, but very few people know everything, and can think of it when it matters in the middle of a game that isn't going well. if the guy had yelled 'fkin play zarya, useless DVA bitch' or something then he woulda got an insteant mute, how hard is it to press 'p' and click the speaer to mute someone, takes maybe 1.5s

I guess you have just had some really bad experiences with comms in OW and I don't think I'm going to change your mind, but you are hamstringing your own potential to rank up if you refuse to communicate by default.

Yep, probably spot on with that one.
