P Plates

I didnt use them when I passed, I just jumped in the car and got on with it.

I have to be honest though, I have no idea about the law on this, are they a legal requirement? Is there a set period layed out somewhere?

Never seen the point either, i am rather worried that you are still even contemplating the possibility of stalling a car after passing, the phase of not being able to pull off properly should have gone with the first few hours of learning surely? :eek:

People do it now and then, everyone makes mistakes :)
 
I didnt bother, I wasnt scared of being on the road so I wasnt going to be a hinderance to other drivers so I didnt feel the need to let them know I had just passed.
 
p for poooosae, thats what i sed. Yeh you do get some realy tailgaters, just look at them in your rearview, if you have to brake suddenly and they go into the back of you its their fault, and their insurance will cough up. Also if u see them urging to over take you, let them, you'l only annoy them more if u dont.
 
They would probably be a good idea provided there were not two sorts of person on the road: the sort who accepts that new drivers do make the occasional mistake and will have mercy on the odd slip up and the sort that sees any outward sign indicating learner or inexperienced as an obstacle to passed asap whether it's safe to or not.

As for stalling, i've had 7 lessons i still stall about once in every 5 pull aways. No problem crawling forward, no problem once i'm going either. Not everyone is a natural :)
 
I thought about P plates for a good few minutes, then I though nah, I'll just get a bigger car.

I stalled all the time when learning, even my on test. I blame it, fully, on starting to learn in a diesel and then changing to a wimpy petrol car. Only stalled once since getting my own car (all of 5 days so far), though I've felt it chugg a few times, but quite frankly if some **** wants to accelerate into the back of me, their welcome.

I did stall a quite a few times during the first 2 weeks. Combination of getting used to the clutch from the car I was learning in to my car car and me and my dad adjusting the clutch travel distance when we gave the car a service.

P Plates are off now anyway :p
 
I have P plates on my car, I dont pretend to be a totally experienced driver after 17 lessons and I dont see the harm in letting the rest of the world know that I've only recently passed my test. I find it hard to believe that everyone who passes their test never makes a novice mistake again in the weeks immediately after they pass.

I've never stalled my car, although I did stall the car I learned in a couple of times in the early lessons, clutch control is not something I have an issue with.
 
They (iirc they use another letter) are mandatory in NI and it works quite well from what i've seen.

It's down to personal preference but a lot of drivers with limited road experience could benefit from others giving them a little more space and allowing for them not being familiar with night/bad weather driving etc.

If it were enforcable i'd like to see it as a mandatory requirment for say 3 months. While it wouldn't prevent a lot of accidents i'd be happy if it stopped just one person being injured or worse. Passing a driving test is the absolute MINIMUM standard you need to be at to drive on our roads, Pass +, IAM etc should be the norm along with mandatory 5 year re-tests but we aren't likley to see that while the majority think they are god's gift behind a wheel.

Exactly. But unfortunately i think they should somehow be made compulsory and young drivers should be limited to small engined cars e.g. 1.2s. Ive had it with young drivers, and im only 21.

I never drove like a ***** when i passed my test, and i drive a 100bhp sunny SR, but soo many of them go as fast as they can around every corner, roundabout, and sit up your ass in a 30 with their fog lights on.

also ironic to see the same crowd who claim the P is for female genitalia and screams lack of confidence are the same crowd who scream you don't learn to drive until after you have passed. (You learn to operate the vehicle, pass your test, then learn to drive.)
