P35 hardware monitoring utils?

OK, well i hope the new one works better! I just finished taking my rig to pieces, adding fans and sorting the cables out. I also reseated the Ultra-120 and i'm my temperatures are definitely a lot better.

I think they could still be better, because i kept knocking the heatsink while it was in my case which must have messed up the contact between the CPU and HSF. Well, anyway, still with a stock E6600, my load temperature has decreased from 52 to 48 degrees Celsius. This is with TAT, however. Using Orthos blend the CPU cores get about 45 degrees Celsius.

After adding a 92mm fan, my NB temperature has dropped from about 48 to 34 degrees Celsius under load. Although, i did add another 1600rpm fan, too, which i assume is also helping things a long a bit. ;)

Oh, when you attached the backplate to the motherboard, did you peel off the while plastic bit to reveal the sticky surface or did you just leave it all on?

Very nice setup there. When I get my other ultra and my 8800 ultra tommo I will post some pics.

I will have 6x120mm fans in my rig!! Although I know more fans does not always make a better cooled system.

However there are 3 as stock. 1 x antec tricool intake in the bottom compartment for the hard drives, set to low. 2 x antec tricool exhaust fans in the top of the case, and top rear of the case set to low also. I will then add 1 x scythe 1200rpm fan blowing onto the gpu, in the middle hd bay area, and will have another 2 x scythe 1200rpm fans in a push pull config on the TR ultra.

To answer your question, I peeled off the paper square stuff on the x-bracket on my first ultra. On the TR faq they say you should leave it on if you intend using the cooler on another board as it becomes difficult to take off later. We'll see. One mistake I made is I left on the plastic elasto yokes on the back of the x-bracket. That didn't help matters. Did you leave that plastic stuff on ? Anandtech on his update review comments on the purpose of these and I think they should be left on.

I am thinking now I will apply a thin layer of AS5 on the cpu and on the heatsink tommorrow when the new one arrives. That's what TR say to do. Using the AS method of a blob in the middle or a straight line doesn't seem to work as there is always paste removed from the middle when I check later. This must be over the heatisnk being concave. How did you apply your paste ?

I was also thinking you could cut some of the foam that comes in the Ulta box and use that to stop the heatsink from rotating. It's definitely strong enough, unlike the CD foam I used which compressed too much so made no difference.

To be honest I am ordering a Noctua N12 tonight as a backup in case the 2nd Ultra is a bust. Can always send it back if the Ultra works out.

What in your view would be a good alternative. no one has the Tuniq, and my mate has the same problem I have with the nonextreme Ultra. It's either the Scythe Ninja or Infinity which have terrible mounting systems. That leaves the Noctua which gets good reviews allround. Not convinced the fans are up to much though as they are supposed to suffer from backpressure problems. 2 scythe fans on it sound better.

I think the Noctua with your scythe fans would be your next best option if the second Ultra-120 doesn't work out. The poor push-pin mounting mechanism on the Infinity can easily be sorted out using some bolts and springs, and the backplate from your Ultra-120 set. In fact, you may even be able to use the bolts and springs that came with your Ultra-120, as well. But, of course, this would mean you can't send the Ultra back. Anyway, the Noctua should be your best backup option (better than the Infinity, i'd say).

The first time i applied the paste in this setup (the first time for me ever, actually), i just spread it around with a piece of plastic. Being my first time i was dubious about the "line" method, however i knew the way i had done it didn't turn out very well but i didn't have anything to clean it off with at the time so i just left it. That's why i had such bad temperatures. However, when i reseated the Ultra-120 today i applied a line of paste on the CPU IHS, as per Arctic Silver's recommendation, and as it's knocked a good few degrees off my CPU core temperature.

I think one of the reasons the "line" method worked out a little better for me was because i was a little more experienced at doing it. So, if i try the normal spread-it-around-the-IHS method again, it might work out better than before because i'll know how to do it better. At the end of the day, you have to try each method yourself to find out which is better. Let's just hope spreading it on the IHS and heatsink will work for you so you won't have to mess about with other trying out different HSFs etc.

What plastic stuff do you mean? I left on the plastic X-shaped thing and peeled off the white paper/plastic stuff so the sticky stuff underneath it would... well, stick the backplate to the motherboard.

I know this is the wrong place to post this, but i have a question for you, Flanno. Which is the correct version of memtest to get? There seems to be so many different versions and i really don't know which to burn onto a CD. Also, is there anything else i have to do to the CD in order to get my computer to boot from it? Thank you.

I use Memtest 86+ 1.70.
Used Nero to make a bootable CD with memtest on it and for the boot files I pointed it to my floppy drive which had an xp boot floppy in it. If you have no floppy drive or bootable usb stick, all you really need is a bootsector file (boot.ima) which you can google..just lob it onto a folder on the c: drive and point nero to it. It will do the rest. Of course memtest won't be able to write anything to the cd. Hence in the past I always used floppies for this sort of thing.

Thanks, man. So, since i don't have a floppy drive at hand or a bootable USB stick, what exactly do i have to do? I've have both memtest 1.7 and boot.ima extracted on my desktop; do both of these need to be put on a CD?

Download the .iso version and burn the image to cd using Nero or ImgBurn.

I have the iso version, its file name is "memtest86+-1.70.iso". So, all i have to do is select the "Make Bootable CD" on Nero, click on "Add" and select the extracted iso file, right? I'm then told to "insert a bootable disc into the drive"; how do i make the disc bootable before burning the memtest file onto it?

Thank you for your help.

I just made one.

First use something like Magic ISO or Daemon Tools to mount your iso so you can extract the memtest files into a folder on your PC somewhere. It can mount iso's as drive letters and you can use explorer to open the drive and pull the files out.

Once you have the memtest files and your boot image in a folder on your hard drive, open nero burning rom. Select CD Rom(boot) from the drop down gui on the left. This brings up a screen which asks you to browse to the source of the boot image data. So browse to the folder where your .IMA file is. Click New, then browse for your memtests files (that you extracted earlier) in the right hand pane, and drag and drop it into the left hand pane. Clik burn. Your done.

The easy way is to make a bootable usb stick by the way :)

Yes, but you said when you did that it went looking for a boot floppy ?

Sorry...my mistake...I did not realise it was a bootable iso you had there..and thought you needed to create one from scratch...so just do what Cobb said and burn the iso and the disc will be bootable :)

When i tried it before i used the "Make bootable disk" option in Nero, which is why it didn't work out right. Thank you for walking me through your method, though, it'll be very handy if i'm in a similar situation in the future. Since i only have one CD left, would you mind pointing me in the direction of the correct memtest file to download please? I'm not sure if the one i have is correct; do i just download the iso, right click on the folder and select extract and just burn the resulting iso to the CD? Thanks again.
