PA Speakers

First of all, I'm a student and I'm in need for something loud and cheap! I already have some bookshelf speakers, but I want something which I can crank up more for parties.

I guess I'd be looking at a cheap PA speaker (or possibly 2, but I probably don't have the budget for this), under the £150 mark. It needs to be active and full range. I'd like to know what sort of connectivity/functionality you get with these sorts of units though. I mean, ideally I'd like to be able to plug it into the mains and have a line-in for a PMP or something.

I just have no idea what's available in this market so, really, all suggestions are welcome (though within the budget!).

For example, how do they deal with midrange since most of them seem to have one really large woofer and a tiny tweeter?

Thanks in advance, and sorry if I'm asking for the impossible (as I've mentioned, I'm a complete novice!).

EDIT: How about this, or possibly these?

My house m8s have the Logitech Z2300's and they are absaloutely immense. Shake the whole house (5 bedrooms) when he turns it on just half volume.

I'd get two of the single ones if you can stretch. I don't reckon the sound quality would be all that good with the bundle.

I think I've narrowed it down to the following:

For a £150 budget I'd be straight on ebay looking for a second hand amp from a quality manufacturer (about 300w a channel) and 2 passive speakers from anyone but soundlab or skyetec. Don't get cheap active speakers for house parties. I've dj'ed at enough houseparties in studentville to comment on this.

mrmoose, thank you for your reply. I'll end up upgrading my bookshelf speakers, getting a stereo amplifier, dac, and eventually a subwoofer sometime down the line anyway to keep in my bedroom. However, I just wanted a single, robust device I can easily move around if necessary which isn't really possible if I get an external amplifier and 2 speakers.

I'm ruling this out completely though, of course! Are there any amplifiers/speakers you'd recommend in particular? Bearing in mind it'll be very difficult to accommodate floorstanders.
