Paddlesports (Kayaking, Canoe, Stand-Up Paddle boards)

Sup inflatables seem to share a similar approach re winter gear for flat water (albeit they then go on to list approx £500 kit loadout)

"At SUP Inflatables we approach this with the mindset of someone cycling, running or even going for a walk on a cold winter’s day when the sun's out — Layers are your friends which can be put on or taken off as your journey unfolds. Keep your layers and maybe an insulated drinks bottle with tea or coffee stored on your board in a dry bag!

Did manage to get out for a 3 hour session earlier the week...was quite windy 12-15mph with 25mph gusts but manageable Good too start seeing lighter days again & first signs of spring

Breathable dry suit for me. If it is really cold I wear a base layer that is fleece lined underneath, if not too cold, comando baby (not really just pants and wicking t-shirt).

Think shorts and t-shirt for me tomorrow with current weather conditions! :)

Was due out early today but fridge freezer decided to pack up just as was leaving so had to cancel @ short notice :( Now going tomm morning but won't be out for as long as would like (new fridge arriving )

Anyone else been out for a paddle?

Got out today on the River Lune.

Still very full from the rain. Where we park there’s a small weir about 200m upstream. We paddled to that to get an idea of the current, then rode that downstream for around 2 miles to the next, much bigger weir then turned around.

Would’ve liked a longer paddle given the weather but heading back upstream was tough and my friend has spent the last few days digging in his garden so was pretty wiped out.

And @ThriceNightly I was in your mindset. Shorts and t-shirt for me too, same for my friend. A stark contrast to two guys who turned up in full wetsuit and PFD's...

It wasn't even that cold as i ended in the water once as when i went to catch the fast flowing current from the weir/dam, i didn't manage to get my board turned in time so ended up around 90degrees to the current and it just rocked me off. Was actually tricky getting back on as the current was pushed me along. Can see how people get caught out on proper fast flowing rivers. Didn't help that my shorts were too big and kept falling down whenever i jumped up to my board. Must've been a grim sight for anyone near!

Lol Martyn thats a funny image I have of you mounting board :p. When i do go for a swim I always kick my legs out so body is horizontal and drag myself across but am only 65kg though imagine not as easy in fast flowing waters.

I forgot to mention did hit a newly created sand bar at speed ( caused by the floods after weir outlet) the sudden stop fortunate made me fall forward to knees so lucky no falling in...reminds me to source a shorter fin

Good couple of hours this morning no wind hazy & very hot. t-shirt & lycra run shorts...could really have taken a tank top it was that warm saw a few families out on inflatable kayaks...... very early in the season:cool:

Had a nice few paddles this last week. Yesterday I had a glorious hour wakeboarding and then a paddle early evening. Dinged my JP quite badly yesterday and have done a repair but need to get some paint as it looks pretty bad with the white putty on dark grey. Hit some metal on the dock wall when putting the board in.

Yes kit can certainly take a bashing on old canal structures / mooring ironwork...my carbon paddle is often used beating back vegetation, fend off swans as well as inverted as a bill hook for dragging me to the bank in tricky situations:cry: couple of years old now am thinking to give it some TLC perhaps a rub down and respray

Just sold the new sup bag so getting v close to my goal of £500 board only and that will include keeping the super pump...don't really need it but it is a great piece of kit

Aiming to get out on water easter sunday morning seeing that the wind is dropping

I did the biggest repair I've done so far last weekend. the seam on my fanatic all rounder frayed and pulled away with at least 5 or 6 cm opened and I repaired it ineefectively last year.

I removed the patch and opened up the seam, re glued it and then patched over the fray. so far so good. pumped it to 15 (rated to 19-20). had a ride and its been inflated now for a week. Seems ok, touch wood.

It ain't pretty but the board is years old. Great for the kids and I windsurf with it.

Well done getting it sorted ...have not had to carry out any repair yet on my boards but good to hear even the more complex issues are repairable.

Looking to get back into kayaking (or SUP with a seat attachment), where is the best place these days to pick up something second hand?

Have sold sup on both gumtree and ebay...take a look what is locally available or if looking nationally at least the inflatables are fairly easily posted with suitable box. Be quick though reckon there will be another shortage this year what with Stay-cation Britain

Was out this morning did 9km nice conditions though am still in my winter gear as started 1c and the chill certainly licks across the water meadows with the wind that was around. Last week on the bank holiday morning was amazed too see a couple of guys on new sups in t-shirts & bare feet...was sunny but a distinct chilly wind.....had a good chat with them & they were well enjoying the day.

Was having some issues over the last few weeks with carbon paddle clamp not holding height position but fortunate after a disassemble /clean / re-adjustment now appears holding just fine.....certainly tested getting back upstream in headwind. Glad with the paddle have certainly really trust it especially with the winter use.

Now looking forward too some warmer temps & will be planning on a longer paddle along the entire canal length.

Did 12km yesterday morning...nice conditions though a frosty start. This is the spot will also jump in for swim in the summer....still a bit chilly to consider that at the mo:p Lots on the water kayak clubs etc

Today also looking particularly good conditions.....hope you are all finding some time to get out on the water

Beautiful weekend.
Moved to Wales and left a lot behind a couple of years ago.
Moved from Lincolnshire (so flat) to Cardiff having never been to Cardiff. Moved purely because of hobbies.

I miss my old friends. But absolutely love the hobbies I can do here.

Did a little kayak from Caswell to Pwll Du on Saturday

Very jealous of that. A guy i paddle with has a brother who lives in Tenby and is always very jealous. Especially on days like that!

It was a big move. I was ready to buy a house. And it felt like now or never to move. Had a lot of chats with the gf about moving over. Really wished I'd done it sooner.
It is hard sometimes seeing my old friends doing stuff together. But I'm not super social. I do want to make some more friends around here into this stuff though. That my mission for the year.

Body board, mountain biking (new hobby) and kayaking are my things. And it's so good for that here.

Tenby is amazing. If I can get my job to be fully remote I'd love to live there. Or new Zealand. One of the two!

Oh. Wales is no where near as wet as what I was led to believe. OK, the winters are. But the summers can be nearly as good as the east. Its definitely a bigger seasonal effect here!
