Not even sure what these things are tbh, I assume you can buy them... but im asking as this fella has done it to his US Dodge here:

http://dodgeforum.com/forum/dodge-journey/291690-painted-headlights-are-on.html

He's done a few mods to his, but those lights look neat.. but im not sure if they are legal over here?

No why mod a poxy Dodge replies please, im just interested in sprucing the thing up a bit, its quite nice to look at but im getting some 21s I think, so if I can get the lights done too that would be decent.

I'd imagine they would be illegal, but they arent painted are they? Isnt it like a condom you wrap over the entire headlight?

Not illegal, depends on how much lights is bieng shown through the tint/film.
The can appear black aslong and they let enough light through them, same for the rear lights i've yet to be pulled over for my rear lights and when off they look black.

Ok nice.

So this the sort of thing that garages would do then? Might get some quotes tomorrow.

Cheers,

Cheers,

well i don't know if garages would do it for you, but i bought my rear lights already black and installed them myself. since then it's passed an MOT and i've not been pulled over for having them.

I never understand why people like to modify their cars to make their lights harder to see :S its on the same lines as removing the air-bag to have a wheel that looks like its from a racing car. I nearly got hit a few weeks ago by a guy with black rear lights who pulled out as I was about to pass him (duel carriageway) I only saw as he swung out 2ft in front of my bumper that his indicator was on, the tint made it invisible from >1 meter away >.>

Same reason why a lot of OEM lights are tinted for their special editions?

Last two cars I've owned have came out the factory with clear or tinted lights. Tinted lights looks so much better.

As far as Im aware they are. My friend bought a car, where the prev owner had done so. And we got pulled over driving back from the buyers home.

I dont think its worth the hassle.

They aren't tinted, the owner has separated the lights and painted the chrome surrounds. Reflectors left chrome. AKA. 'joey mod'. Not illegal and headlight output not affected (though I guess it depends on the light.)

I was beginning to think I had been looking at the wrong pictures until you posted that - there aren't any tinted lights in that thread!

Technically speaking that's not road legal over here, but I doubt anyone would ever pull/do you for it as it would be virtually impossible for pc plod to tell it was done.

Oh so theres 2 different things available? Paint the surrounds which is what ive seen, and also tint the actual glass of the light.

I saw somebody who instead of painting his headlights, he stretched black women's tights over them to make them tinted, that was illegal. (Police made him rip them off)

If it's just the surround which it appears to be - then it's legal.

In this case it isn't a matter of that. The reason why as ever is that it looks nicer. Which is why I did mine. The chrome totally ruined the rest of the dark tones of the car:
