Did a search but could not find any previous threads on this.

The creator of EverQuest, Brad McQuaid, has launched a Kickstarter for creating a more difficult MMO that goes back to the days of EverQuest but with modern games in mind but without the conveniences of today's MMO's.

To me it looks really promising but would need more backers to hit the $800k target in the 30 days that are left.

Hopefully there are some people here who are willing to pledge and help make this happen. I've pledged as much as I can myself as I really believe this could be a new beginning for MMO's.

For some of you who have not played EverQuest and games like it, it was an MMO where you had to be social and interact with other players unlike today's MMO's.

Adventuring as a group was one of the most important aspects of the game if you wanted to survive. Soloing was possible if you knew your class well but grouping was always the best option.

I played and raided hardcore in EQ - we're talking phone calls at 3am when a boss spawned. It's not the kind of life I could lead now, or indeed would want to go back to.

That being said EQ was unique in many ways and I made some great friendships which have lasted through to present day. However, it's also well known that many of EQ's gaming mechanics came about by chance and that Brad's involvement was largely sitting in his office throwing out whacky ideas whilst doing prescription meds.

So, if they stick him in a room with a pile of prescriptions maybe Pantheon will become something, otherwise no.

Just stumbled on this and pledged. Mixed feelings really, loved EQ but it did take a toll on my life and I've no desire to go back to that lifestyle. Hopefully casual gamers will be able to do stuff as well.

Looking back, the main problem with EQ was trying to find a group, it basically encouraged all players down the EC/OOM/LOIO/OT/DL/KC cycle if you wanted to level, and of course you did. I hear what Brad is saying about travel not being ultra-convenient like it is in WoW, but at the same time I don't really want to spend an hour getting to a target location then finding there's no-one there and I can't do anything.

Brad has said that the game is designed to be played in shorter sessions. Dungeons will have safe spots where you can log off for example.

In EQ we could often stay at camps for 6, 10 hours or even more at a time as it was such a hassle to get there that you did not want to leave. Same with raids, our Sunday raid schedule for example was 12pm to 7pm.

I think he's realised that those kind of things are not realistic for his audience anymore with jobs, kids and so on.

From what I've read the travel system will be quick travel points once you've discovered them but not many of them. It sounds like a good compromise to me. I guess it might be a bit like Planes of Power portals in EQ where you can port to certain locations but you will still have to run some distance.

Am I missing something? Looks like it brings nothing new to the genre, player driven economy could be fun - if there's enough players to drive it though.

They need to work harder at kickstarters, this looks like it'd either be well under-funded at 800K or simply get rushed out in a half-baked state. I love how player housing is a $4million stretch goal, seriously?

and each new class /race is 250k lol...

crafting and gathering one of the really high goals :S

Always wary of kickstarted MMOs, I see so many and they often get funded but I'm not sure many will actually have the player base at launch and they're never very far along obviously. I fear the heyday of mmos is long gone, before players knew better and thus became far more entitled.

What were they thinking with the stretch goals, standard MMO features that should be in the game are considered stretch goals.

It's a niche MMO, targeted at a specific subsection of the market - specifically people who liked old school EQ. PVP and crafting were never really that important in EQ, and player housing never existing. Personally I think all these things are a bit meh anyway, I'd rather they got the adventuring part right.

So needs 4million to actually be a complete Game.

Seems he messed up. Thought he could get funding with his name. Rather than content.

wrong though,

the kickstarter was originally done to find an audience to prove publishers that there is a market.

this is based on the old school mmos. no more soloing stuff that was not designed to be soloed. actual classes and roles unlike other mmo's (like my last one neverwinter where iwas MT in our group as an assasin). i certainly hope it will get funded as all other mmos are dumbed down and too easy :(

If its to prove market, then the stretch goals are stupid.

And theres other memos with proper classes etc.

You can't just go old school, you have to take the good bits from the past and add the good bits from now.

This project just looks silly and is just trying to use his name on an ill throughout kickstarter campaign. The campaign page, pledge levels, stretch goals are really silly.

I think some people need to have a serious think about stretch goals when they are making them and realise how they sound to potential backers.
I'm convinced it's the reason a lot of games have failed to get funded, certain features are expected of a genre and should not be considered extras they are core features half of the time.

this is what the lead developer said though, you should watch the Q&A videos. he said it will mainly be old school but take the good bits that currently in mmos too (however i don't know what good bits there are right now).
and yes stretch goals are silly but by the looks of it, it will be a close call to reach the initial target anyway.
