parking on street - neighbours say we shouldn't

interested to hear what we can do.

our drive way comfortably allows 2 vehicles, or 3 with the 3rd blocking the other 2. we park on the drive, and 1 on the road, as well as have motor bikes on the drive too.

today for the first time we've had an extra vehicle so put that on the road too, so now 2 on drive, 2 on the road, by weekend it'll be back down to 1 on road.

1 neighbour comes over huffing and puffing, wants us to move 1 vehicle so that they can park on the road. i say no as we also have a 3rd vehicle coming to use our drive (friend) and want the space so they can use it, but regardless, it's a free road, they have 2 vehicles on the road, zero on their drive.

he blocks my vehicles in and says some silly thing about hoping we don't have an early start etc, so i go take photos and he gets more upset by this. now another neighbour, his direct neighbour, comes out, says we aren't being "neighbourly", we shouldn't park a single car on the road, that our 3rd vehicle has used the road since may 31st at 6pm, and before we moved in it wasn't an issue parking vehicles.

any way, i explained we have 2 on our drive, and 2 on the road, they have zero on their drive (none of them (the moaning ones) have bothered to convert their front gardens to drive ways when almost all could), 2 on the road, while we also for the first time ever have 2 on the road and it's short moment, and in fact are replacing our drive way to help solve this issue. what are they doing? nothing, it's all our fault etc.

these spaces i should say aren't outside anyones house, but in a little tucked away bit opposite all the houses.

now, the point of this thread, does anyone know what we can do to stop any future hassle? i don't wish to feel like i can't park my vehicles on the road. i don't wish to be blocking myself in and forever moving vehicles, just so that the other neighbours can freely use the road and i can't.

thinking to call 121 (is that the right number) to see if can get someone round to speak with them and tell them to not hassle us like that again. or alternatively, thinking to send a letter, that if they continue to block us in etc, we will take it further.

I may also give away something here but what about hammering frozen sausages into their lawns?


For gods sake your a grown adult I assume that anything you have Parker on the road is taxed and insured and MOTd correctly? Tell the neighbour to kindly do one and move on with your life
 
Tell them that they should contact the council if they wish to raise a parking issue on your road. You have every right to park your car on a road with no parking restrictions.
 
Legally, as long as the cars are taxed and insured they can be parked on the road. You could park 10 LWB S Classes all down the road if you wanted. Neighbours' sounds like bellends but think carefully about how to proceed - stick to your guns and you may end up with parking wars where they go out of their way to make things difficult for you. These things rarely end well for anyone, everyone becomes curtain twitchers and angry at the other party for no reason. It never matters who is 'at fault', 'causing the problems' or 'started it' - what happens is everyone feels wronged and nobody is happy.

I doubt you'd get the police or community teams out for anything like this, equally remember that if the police do become involved you are required to declare that when selling the property (there is a specific question about any problems with neighbours) so that would put buyers off.

it's totally nonsense.

the thing to be said though is that we have a drive, they don't. it's them who will struggle if they decided to stupidly take some sort of parking wars thing. they dno't want to spend to convert their drive. this cul-de-sac is at max capacity so cannot fit another car on it that's relatively near to the houses.

this is what gets my really. they want to use the road, and want us to not. their attempt to get that to happen, is not be nice, no reason, not show any understanding, but instead come out all emotionally charged and say we're not neighbourly. you know those types that say something silly, when questioned they run away, then run back say another silly thing, then when questioned run away.

i do feel like something has to happen. they think we should never use the road, so will never agree if we go over and say, it's happening tough luck. i'd rather there be some sort of service to sort these issues out.

yes all vehicles are taxed, mot etc.
 
Its nonsense but it won't stop them from creating aggro its one of the commonest causes of disputes with neighbours

Get a CCTV is my advice you might find your vehicles suffering "accidental" damage overnight

No sort of service like this exists. The expectation is that everyone acts like a grown up and either comes to an agreement, or doesn't and just put up with everyone doing what they wish.

Obviously if they do block you in then I believe a call to the council or the police to have the vehicle removed.

the cul-de-sac is full of cars as many houses have 2 cars each, and no driveway. they have front spaces, big enough for at least 1 car, but they have made these into gardens.

for us to put the 3 vehicles on the drive, we'd be blocking our cars in. due to the in and out (especially before covid) this would require swapping parked vehicles at least twice a day. i am happy to leave my 3rd vehicle on the road so that I can live my life without that nonsense. fair no? we also have friends etc regularly, so this ensures there is always at least some where they can park. they block us in, but they go first any way.

i hope my beautiful creation is clear. my drive is a bit deeper, but it shows enough of what i mean. usually i park either of the 2 red ones that are filled in, depending on which is available, but tonight have both spaces taken. to the left is someones rear garden from another street. the right is the houses. the neighbours don't think i should use any of those spaces.
 
Glad I don't live in a place where parking is a situation any more. At the end of the day people are going to have guests or someone else in a household gets old enough to drive and needs a vehicle to get to work, etc. adding extra vehicles.

Used to make me laugh at my old house as everyone would try and park exactly outside their property, by the end of the evening there would be loads of gaps you couldn't fit a vehicle in that added up could have made room for another 3 vehicles or so if people had just filed in and used the space up properly, people would start parking on the opposite pavement and complaining there wasn't enough room, etc. sure it would never be perfect but they all made it worse for themselves.
 
If the houses have no driveway, are the parking bays allocated for them?

If not then the neighbour can do one, it's first come first served where you park your car
