I was going to build a pc a while back but my parents wouldnt let me until summer incase it interfered with school work

Currently Have:
Case: Cooler Master CM90II lite
PSU: Antc True power 650w (modular)
HDD: A 500gb seagate one ( was about 30 quid from here)
Memory: 8GB Geil Value DDR3 1600Mhz and 4 Gb DD3 1600 Mhz which i think is XMS3
Optical drive: Took it out my old pc its just a bog standard one with lightscribe ( whis is pretty useless)

I have 400-500 pound to spend on a Mobo/CPU/GPU combo and a decent (ish) heatsink.

The pc is going to be for gaming mainly MMO's and RPG's but il probably get some shooters if i have the money. I currently have a crappy monitor and my 37" full hd LG tv but i will get a monitor for christmas.

Therer is a small problem i think in that i plan to go to uni next september (2012) and i want to do Electonic Engeneering with computer hardware or a Computer science degree. At the last open day i went to they reccomended that students have their own high(ish) spec pc because we're going to be doing allot of moddeling etc.

If you've read to hear thanks :D
P.S the reason i dont use the pound sign is because my computer doesnt like the combination of shift and 3 for some reason

At the top of your budget but should run like a good-un :D

chose a dearer mobo because it has Lucid Virtu so you can fully use the cpu for video editing etc

Thanks for the specs.
£500 is probably the very maximum i can go to as that was the stretch from £450 :p , I still have to spend £40 on my copy of windows 7.

I thought the 6950's were about £170-180 when they came out

just throwing it out there :)

the one speced by Redmint is a 2GB version which should help for higher res/upping the AAs

Thanks for the help, whats the real differance between p67 and Z68 mobo's?

Im guessing the z68's are beteer for crossfire and sli or something

My pick is Redmint's.

Not really. It can use the onboard GPU for video transcoding, has intel SRT technology (using a SSD as a cache, similar to a Seagate Momentus XT drive), and Lucid Virtu (GPU virtualisation, not really useful unless you want to save a little on your energy bills). Note that the Z68 support can be hit and miss (looking at you, Gigabyte).

If you want a cheap P67 alternative, the MSI P67-GD53. Will do SLI (although the case headers are poorly placed), and overclock well. (EDIT : Redmint has it covered :)).

Then you have a little left in budget for say, a 570 or a 6970. Dropping the 3rd party cooler is also an option, you can always buy one later when you want / need to overclock. The Gelid is a good budget cooler. 30% overclock (4.4GHz) is easily achievable.

hmm still cant fit a 570 with a decent motherboard within budget.

Ideally, I'd go with this myself...

factory Overclocked 6950, and a very good motherboard. Other options for keeping within budget, of course :)

Can you still flash the 6950's?
Haven't seen anyone talk about it in a while.

Also while what you typed about the z68 looks very impressive il be honest and say i have no clue what you're on about XD

P67 Vs Z68 ?

^^ good choice imo.

and that gigabyte mobo is matx :)

if you dont want/need sli/crossfire feature but still want Z68 features, get the asrock pro3

I wont need crossfire straight away but when it comes to the end f the GPU's life il be at uni, so crossfiring a second one will be a more viable (cheaper) option than buying a new one i hope :)

Now GPU decision, im more than likely going to go for a 6950 but which one to get ?

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-147-OK&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1752 thats the cheapest 2gb model

is this one really worth the extra £40?

the MSI was on offer not so long ago for £200, atm i dont think its worth the extra £40, i think you should just get whatevers on offer/cheapest at the time of ordering, make sure to get the 2GB version though.

Ordering today :D
Just deciding between a 560ti and a 6950 because my friend thats helping me build it recommended the 560ti, i wish picking stuff was easier :(
