Pass plus?

Does that means the guy on the right is in the wrong lane assuming he's doing <70 and you want to be doing 70?

You can undertake if the flow of traffic in the lane to your right is less than that of the limit on the stretch of road, providing you are only undertaking by doing a maximum of the limit.

That's what I understand/was taught (I think...been a while since I learnt :p).

I found doing the pass plus quite handy for the experience, as I didn't have access to a car to use apart from the previous instructors one. Saved about £50 in addition to the cost of taking it off insurance.

The things included in PP should be part of the main learning / testing imo.

My main bug bear is when I'm in my mighty fez (1.4 :)) and happy to sit at 60ish overtaking the occasional lorry, but some muppet sits at the same speed alongside me in the middle lane, thus making my overtaking of said lorries much harder.

I did Pass Plus, as it was offered for free in Cumbria when I had passed my test. Saying that, I would probably have done it anyway, as I feel it covers all the stuff that should be in the normal test, and is often what young drivers are just left to learn themselves. The motorway and night driving are very useful, and I hadn't done much heavy traffic driving so going into a city was also useful.

Awesome, well I'm all booked up for next Saturday and the Wednesday after, with my instructor who's already taken me for my original test. Means he knows how I drive, and also that he has taken me for plenty of lessons at night/in bad weather/in heavy traffic already, so hopefully he won't feel the need to "teach" me quite as much.

Looking forward to it actually, it's good to see that a lot of people are giving it positive feedback on here, most of the time all you ever see are complaints when it comes to driving lessons and tests - nice to know that this will actually be worthwhile :D

Some instructors will just asses your driving in an hour or two and give you the certificate if they believe you're half good.

One of my mates did that.

Undertaking isn't illegal, as in there is no specific law against it, however you are likely to attract a charge of driving without due care an attention.

A few years back I was speaking with a recently retired traffic cop about this. He was quite annoyed having recently lost a case where he tried to do someone for undertaking, the situation was pretty much an empty motorway, one middle lane moron doing 60 and the defendant who was doing 70 in the outside lane. The defendant decided he couldn't be arsed to move to L3 to go past the MLM so just carried on in L1.

The court ruled that the cop should'e pulled the MLM on due care and attention for not noticing that there were other cars approaching and moving back to L1 in order to facilititate overtaking. They did note that if the undertaker was, for example, in L3 and pulls into L2, undertakes one car because that's all there is room to do before hitting the lorry in L2 and then pulls back into L3 then in that situation they should pull the undertaker.

To answer the OPs question. You are being offered this course for free. Bloody well take it. Just because you have passed your test doesn't mean you know how to drive properly. That takes years of experience. Pass plus wont make you know how to drive properly either but it will help a lot, especially on the motorway.

you should cover 4 or 5 out of the 6 "topics" in your normal lessons, though i'd recommend just taking the pass plus for the motorway lesson :p

ive never seen anything wrong with what people would call "undertaking" on the motorway when a MLM is doing about 60 and im doing quicker, do it all the time.

Only certain insurers recognise it, but it's definitely worthwhile IMO. It gave me a confidence boost on motorways and the large roundabouts at turnoffs.

As I said, so long as you are only doing 70mph it's fine, if you're doing 80mph/90mph then it's not.

I did 6 hours in one stint with the AA in a Focus, was quite good.

My AA instructor told me he would do 6 hours, 1+2+3 hour sessions. I didn't bother as it wouldn't reduce my premium according to the few companies I called.

I disagree. If the inside lane is clear and that is the lane you are in for some time then there is no problem with the undertake. Whether you are going too fast is a separate issue and should not be confused with undertaking an MLM/OLM.
