So I passed my driving test two weeks ago and I'm in two minds about taking the Pass Plus lessons.

Does the certificate have any meaning in the current climate in terms of insurance discounts etc?

I'm 27 so I'm not sure if it would actually make much difference to insurance pricing. Its looking to be around £150 or so if I was to take the extra lessons to get the certificate.

Did you bother doing it - and if so did you find it worthwhile? :)

I wouldn't do it personally.

Just spend a few evenings doing the worthwhile stuff on the course yourself once you've got a car (driving on a motorway, night driving, driving in rain/wet).

At 27 I can't see it would help that much with insurance and it's only valid for your first years insurance anyway.

I didn't do it at 17 because I just had a go at the motorway and night driving myself with a parent in the car and it seemed to make little to no different on my insurance.

It was more-so for motorway driving but I practice that with an experienced driver.

It would probably make more sense to put the £150 towards insurance. My age doesn't seem to be making much difference though as I'm getting pretty silly quotes on pretty much most cars.

It got me a 10% discount on my first years insurance. Try running an insurance quote saying you have it. If they drop by more than the cost of pass plus you have your answer.

Try a different car.

Everyone gets a 1.2l small hatchback as a first car so statistically more are written off/involved in accidents than larger stuff.

At 18 I could insure a 1.8l Mondeo cheaper than a 1.2l Corsa.

Add older female family members as named drivers, your mum, your sister, your auntie or anyone like that as they should bring the quote down.

At 27! Either you live in a dodgy area or it's a brand new car.

I've never seen the age of the car make that much difference at all.

Bordering E/F postcodes and the cars I am quoting are all 4/5 years old - 1.2 Polos etc.

Unless I am looking in the wrong places for quotes.... If you guys can recommend any companies that would be great. The high quotes are really putting me off.

Best is to phone around, but using confused.com, moneysupermarket.com and comparethemarket.com gives you a pretty good rough idea on simple basic cars like this. No use for expensive or special stuff though.

I was planning on phoning around at the weekend and seeing if that makes any difference. Age doesnt seem to come into the equation as I've tried a few quotes with different ages and they all come out pretty much the same if you have held your licence for less than a year.

I'm going to have a look at a few cars on Monday so I'll see if I like anything else.

Pass plus is a waste of time from ALL angles if you ask me (and I did it). Spend the £150 on a few general advanced driving lessons, pass plus is aimed at people with no road smarts. I found it a waste as had a full bike licence before I had a car so had road smarts.

It's good when you're young, gives you that extra bit of tuition and definitely helped me get cheaper insurance. Not sure whether it would be worth it for you, as suggested best to do some quotes with and without it and see how they compare.

For me it hardly made a difference for insurance quotes, maybe £50-100 at the most. I live in an "A-grade" post code and it was still £2k for a 1.6 astra to insure.

I did it but only because it made financial sense, didn't feel the need to actually do the training side of things.

I am 30 and Half way through Pass Plus.

Its pretty good to fill in gaps in knowledge and it comes in handy for building up confidence.

I am doing it for the experience rather than the £ off insurance.

1.8 TDCI Zetec Focus was my first (horrible) car.

1400 for 10months insurance with admiral on their accelerator thingy to earn my first
years NCB quicker. poor Postacode too.

When I appleid last year most insurers didnt even ask for passplus and their online forms didnt really have any options for it from what I saw.

saved me nothing, putting my car on classic insurancr was the cheapest by a country mile, only direct line honoured it and they we,re the dearest by around £1000
