Are you joking? There is no way your 90bhp Octavia is that quick. 40-60 in 6 seconds in 4th is quicker than an Audi A4 3.0 Quattro. Congrats!

Not joking, may have epicly failed at timing, but did it twice looking at stop watch. It comes on boost soon after 40 in 4th. At a push it's just over 7 secs. Surely it's just 'cos it's hitting the little powerband for most of it?

My money is on the MAF.

110TDi should pull cleanly and strongly from 40mph in 4th.

VNT turbo should provide decent boost here too.

VAG-COM will not show up a MAF fault, you will need to interpret the sensor values yourself.

Unless it was like my old mans Sharan, where some ***** put the 90bhp turbo from the lesser VAG diesels. To be fair it did look the same:p

Thanks for all the replies and discussion, and as always Fox's input on the matter ;)

I unplugged the MAF earlier and it was painfully worse, so it's back plugged in now.

Any advice on doing this exactly?

Get to 40mph. Put the car into 3rd gear. Nail it. Change up when the power tails off.

Bet it takes less than 10 seconds to get to 60 now.

If it's a fairly high mileage TDi then the inlet manifold will probably be extremely crudded up from the EGR. I've seen the inlet ports reduced down to a small fraction of their original size from crap that builds up in them, and this can really dent performance.

I had a 110 tdi Passat got it chipped would spin 1st 2nd no problem and was quite a lot quicker than stock,
Infact it would blow my 130 tdi into the weeds, I remember going to buy my Audi taking a test drive and thinking wow this is dog slow.

I think it's bank 003, mine reads around 2g/s when idle and mine goes up to around 170g/s when flat out.

Log a couple of runs and see what's happening. When mine broke it was reading 0.2g/s throughout the entire rev range.

I just went and did some official ocuk testing using the 530d.

40-60 in 4th = 6 seconds or so. Obviously it does it loads quicker in 3rd. Fancy that. In 4th you have to wait for ages for the turbo to kick in properly then off you go. Now this is a considerably more powerful, much better engine.

So I would imagine a dog slow Passat diesel with 110bhp would do 40-60 in...

oooo...

I dunno? 10 seconds perhaps.

The best way to fix this lack of performance is to use the gearbox to select the right gear for accelerating quickly.

I think the point is he's saying it feels slow to the point of frustration, the 40-60 time was just for an indication. Its not a quick car, its a slow car but it shouldnt feel slow or like its struggling - one of the traits of a turbo diesel, they always feel a lot quicker than they actually are.
I'm curious about my 40-60 time in 4th now though, as I reckon 4th is the right gear in mine - I'll often pull onto the M5 from the services roundabout, going from 20 to 70 in 4th with very little lag. Going to have a go this morning if i can :D

By a wonderful coincidence and to aid comparison, I have the 40-60mph times in 4th of a 6-speed mk3 TDCi Mondeo to hand. (Don't ask, but did a few runs to see if the DTUK tuning box I bought actually made a difference..)

stock - 5.4s
with tuning box - 4.7s

I'm not saying these are hyper-accurate but gives you an idea. The mondeo's 4th gear put the 40-60 bit right in the middle of the power band and as standard it had 130bhp and 330Nm. The box was supposed to up that to about 160bhp and about 400Nm, but I never got round to having it rolling roaded.

HTH.

What sort of revs is your passat pulling at 40 in 4th?

im gonna try this tonight in my torqueless 16v wonder, 4th gear and then the correct gear

fox, the passat and bmw may have very different gearing
