Just decided to get my *** in gear and get myself my first passport.

£72 to begin with £3 to get the documents sent securely back to me should I wish this (I think I just ticked this box by mistake though, when I could have saved myself £3 buy going to the Post Office /facepalm)

Apparently if you were born before September 1929 or something you get it free! Great! You have to pay roughly 60 years of tax before you get a free passport, and by that time you will probably not be able to get on a plane for health reasons.

And on top of that I may have to attend an interview to verify I am who I say I am.

Anyone else going through the same process just now or want to comment on passport stuff?

My wallet feels very light now.

Considering how 'sophisticated' passports are compared to the cheaper ol' days, for £7.20 a year, it's a fair price to be honest...

I think it's a ripoff too. Even moreso if you want a quick turnaround (same day) - I'll have to get a new one soon. I wonder if the prices are means-tested like everything else.

Yeah and the first passport cant be down quick turnaround. I wouldn't mind paying more taxes if I got a passport free lol.

Edit: When you break it down to £7.20 its not so bad but I still resent paying for it when I pay taxes. :(

Prices are ridiculous. I need to get my renewed and my sons renewed. About 42 quid for him and 70 off quid for me. Aren't the government already making enough money? Most european countried issue their passports for free...!!!

I had to get my passport renewed 2 years ago. I Kept delaying it. Finaly went for one, and the day i did the passport prices had just risen from £52 to £72 :(. I wasn't too happy. But i didn't need an interview, Maybe you have to go for one because its your first.

This reminds me of something i read in the news the other day. The government are offering 'immigrants' a free 'british' passport and visa's if they go and live in scotland.!

So 'we' the working british pay our taxes to pay for someone elses passport and visa?

I'm not too sure on the full story, didn't have time to read it all because i was in work. But it was something like that.

I don't know if Edinburgh has a passport office, I heard ages ago that I might have to travel to Glasgow to get the interview so thats petrol or train ticket money on top of that. I suppose I could make a day of it if I go look around the shops (can't buy anything though since they stole my money lol)

I'm sure i read somewhere they are going upto £77 soon too!
still got 3 years left on mine, wonder how much it will be by then.

I was looking at getting a UK passport recently, seems to be a bit of a pain.

I have to go through the citizenship etc. which costs around £750 and takes 6 months - I was born in Germany but have lived here pretty much all my life, didn't think it would be so much hassle.

Its Ok, try paying over £100 for 2 passports for children aged 19month and 2 yrs!!!! £46 a possport (5yrs life) £7 check and send.

Had to go to a photoshop to get the photos done...that was a total £14 for both (you do get 6 photos and they can be redone for free if paperwork gets sent back because pics are crap)

They are £124 if you need to get a replacement at an overseas embassy :( I had to get mine earlier this year.

Isn't there a page in the guide book for the passport application about how the money is spent. Shows who gets what and how much each part of it costs etc. At least they justify it like this, unlike most other government depts.

But still, it is a little pricey.

I would like it to be much more hassle than that, allthough we do seem to make it much harder for people like yourself who live and work here than we do for numpties who want assylum and benefits so maybe that the answer for you.

Anyone know if you can pay by direct debit, I wouldnt mind the price if it was monthly and not a one off lol.

I just got back from the post office and found out it's £72 to renew :(. Mine ran out at the beginning of July, and i need it to travel to South Africa in november.

I am in a VERY similar position. I wasn't born in Germany but have Germany nationality and have lived in the UK all my life.

I recently had to renew my German passport, which means booking an appointment going to London, waiting for hours, finally getting fingerprints taken and then having to wait 6-8 weeks for delivery.

I had to pay £45 for the 6 year passport, £6 for the special delivery envelope, train fares and a day off work.

Citizenship really is looking like a nightmare too though. I need to do it sometime, but it's looking hugely expensive and a hell'a lot of hassle.

I lost my passport a couple of weeks ago so just in the process of filling out the application form for a new one.

And yes, £72 for the passport, £4 for photos, and £7 for check and send seems a helluva lot of money!
