Passwoding the wireless connection?

Ok I have recently moved house and I am now living in a terraced house...

When my dad searches for my wireless connection from his pc he can see other routers around the neighbourhood.

Now I have tried on numerous occasions to password my router so no one can connect, but the thing is, its just not working.

I have a D-Link G604T Wireless

This is the security page, I used the WEP, set the password (set as * in the picture) as the digits I wanted but when I saved, restarted the router and went downstairs to configure my dads connection this, it seemed that the router wasn’t passworded and was still accessible without the password...

What do I do?!

Hi,

Not too sure if im barking up the right tree here but......

Is the length of your key too long for 64bit ? Read somewhere that it has to be 5 for 64bit 13 for 128bit.

Again im a nub at wifi so this is probably a slightly comical interlude before someone who actually knows what theyre talking about turns up :D

HTH,

Dave.

Point 1 - Just don't even bother with WEP even less with a 64bit key. Use WPA.

If your dads PC was already connected to the router before you set the key, chances are it would still work and connect to the internet.

Set a WPA key, go downstairs and disconnect him. Then reconnect and he should be asked to provide the WPA key.

5 pairs for 64bit, 10 characters

are we all a bit stupid here today? Clearly the issue is that its set to open system when you want shared key.
However, as said just don't bother with WEP it is useless, just click that WPA button right next to it and all is good.

i was thinking that....thought it was too obvious lol. :o

I have the very same router.

Can you not just get the MAC addresses of the network adaptors you want to be able to connect to the router and enter them on the 'allowed' list? Is this isn't secure I should probably look into sorting my own router out

Also... I have had problems before configuring the router with Firefox... if you still have problems, perhaps try IE.

And after all this, if you still have problems, get the latest firmware.

Yah the router isnt on the website any more so i cant get any firmware updates...

I did an update a few months back also...

Without meaning to steer this thread off topic, can you tell me why this is Tolien? I mean if the router is only allowing certain MAC addresses connect to it, then how can I be at risk?

You can sniff the MAC addresses and then your naughty neighbour/hacker/stalker can spoof his MAC address to be one of your valid MAC addresses and connect to your wireless network.

With encryption the entire packet is unreadable.

Oh, and this doesn't require a huge amount of technical knowledge either, programs to crack WEP and spoof MAC addresses are easily available.

Use WPA and MAC restrictions for the best security.

Ok, how do i set this up? I know some of it, but just so i know im doing it right could someone help me out...

obviously im using 802.1x so...

Server IP Address: 192.168.1.1??
Port: Not a clue... shall i open a port?
Secret: this the password?

Heres a pic, theres a link below to a bigger image if its needed by you high res users...

Ok so do i just type the password in that box?
Yes. :) And then you are almost there...... make it a nice long key as you have 40 or 50 characters to play with. And it is this same key you take downstairs to your Dad.

Note: this key will happily take ANY character from your keyboard. So "F%£*G*A)@@~S(q2342348" is more secure than "password" :D
