Looking for a replacement PATA HDD for a Sky+ box (not HD). The bigger the better. Can anyone recommend one for me please?

I have read conflicting reports about noise and if it should be 5400rpm or 7200rpm. Any ideas?

I have an Amstrad Sky+ box with a Seagate 160GB drive.

PATA in this day and age!

Best guide is this one, I used it to put a 200GB in a early Pace model many moons ago and am considering upping my new Sky HD to 1TB with the current info:

Basically if you can handle the sore botty prices of IDE drives these days then grab a 500GB-750GB drive, run the Hitachi Acoustic Management app on the drive, then use Copy+ to configure / copy data. Swap the drives and the deed is done :)

I never had issues either way with rpm on my old box. Used the original 5200RPM 40GB Maxtor, followed by a 5200RPM Maxtor 120GB then finally a 7200RPM 200GB Seagate, no issues at all. Have you opened yours up to see what is in there at the moment? To my understanding they tend to have 7200RPM drives as standard now given that the slower ones are harder to source and more expensive.

As to what drive to use, I can only find new Western Digi's and Hitachis at 500GB. Western Dig are my fave brand these days so not really a contest. Just a shame they don't have a Green Power version as that would be a better match.

I have opened it up but cannot see what speed it is so just going to plump for the WD. I was looking at the 1TB WD SATA version until I looked inside :(

Thanks for responding, appreciated.

I stuck a 7200rpm Hitachi (Cinemastar I think) 250GB drive I had lying about in my old Sky+ box (Pace V1), and that worked straight off.
