Is there anywhere where you can actually 'demo' this sort of VR kit? Like the rift? I've always been curious.

There are some games that would be cool with it, but generally i like to game as an extension of reality. I do not want to remove myself from reality to the extent that a VR headset does.
I want to be able to sit comfortably, eat, drink and flick between monitors when gaming. I have a second screen for music and temperature/hardware monitoring. I like to look out my window when i'm waiting to respawn. I don't want to have to remove a headset when i get disturbed by the missus, cat or phone call and then have to readjust the headset etc when i put it back on.
I see it as a gimmick, less of a gimmick than 3D but still a gimmick.

There will be those games where the immersion is really cool. So yes, i will get a headset if/when that happens. Though for the best part, i'm not fussed at all.
I don't tend to look at the controller when playing a game so I don't understand that bit , keyboard and mouse wise again I'm so used to using them I don't need to look at them to use them.
I can understand that a user not used to touch typing would have an issue though.
When I play with the Oculus it feels very natural to me, I don't have an issue with input. I would prefer to use a device that would let me interact with the virtual world in a a more natural way though, e.g gloves to interact with objects. I think moving around with your legs is a ways off, there is tech out there but I wouldn't say it is very refined.
Will have to see if I can try an Oculus at some point. Might be something that is not a problem once you have tried it.
I think many people will become converted if they try it, although I do see a potential problem with take up.
At the moment the Microsoft hololens is the one that interests me most.
Oculous Rift is the strong one, but since selling their soul to Fakebook, I really hope NVidia pulls something out the bag.
The problem with VR headsets is you can't see the keyboard
