I see it as a gimmick, less of a gimmick than 3D but still a gimmick.

There are some games that would be cool with it, but generally i like to game as an extension of reality. I do not want to remove myself from reality to the extent that a VR headset does.
I want to be able to sit comfortably, eat, drink and flick between monitors when gaming. I have a second screen for music and temperature/hardware monitoring. I like to look out my window when i'm waiting to respawn. I don't want to have to remove a headset when i get disturbed by the missus, cat or phone call and then have to readjust the headset etc when i put it back on.

There will be those games where the immersion is really cool. So yes, i will get a headset if/when that happens. Though for the best part, i'm not fussed at all.

its a good point!
i think a lot of pets would go hungry for sure :(
its fine wearing it for short amounts of time but thats not how we game is it lol
we'd miss looking at real life stuff!

thats why the microsoft take on it is more reasonable to me, its just like an overlay so i can see it being useful without needing extra funds to pet rescue or whatever

All those monitoring things would pop up in a virtual window.

When you are eating it could be implemented into the virtual world, with AR it wouldn't matter.

You can setup a webcam and again have a pop window if you want to see outside or yourself in third person.

If someone starts talking to you in the real world you can use your external cam with a pop up window. Some of the headsets even look like they have a camera built in suitable for this purpose.

edit:

Just watched the hololens tech demo again, I forgot how amazing that looked.

I like the idea of VR. The issue I have is not being able to see the controller I am using be that mouse and keyboard or Joystick. I think I could probably cope with a gamepad. I have not tried any of the new VR kit so not sure what other peoples experiences are in this area.

I don't tend to look at the controller when playing a game so I don't understand that bit :p, keyboard and mouse wise again I'm so used to using them I don't need to look at them to use them.

I can understand that a user not used to touch typing would have an issue though.

When I play with the Oculus it feels very natural to me, I don't have an issue with input. I would prefer to use a device that would let me interact with the virtual world in a a more natural way though, e.g gloves to interact with objects. I think moving around with your legs is a ways off, there is tech out there but I wouldn't say it is very refined.

Sounds a bit late to the table.

Oculus Rift get my vote, with no Graphics card manufacturer lockins(nvidia) and the widest range of support from developers just because it's been in development for soo long.

The only other I would buy would be the Steam headset, just because they have the leverage to force support in games on their system.

Will have to see if I can try an Oculus at some point. Might be something that is not a problem once you have tried it.

I was dissapointed with it in its current form due to being able to see the individual pixels on the screens, very off putting. This was on a DK2, hopefully the DK3/Consumer version will be better. Some people also get motion sickness with the lower refresh rate, the new version should have a higher refresh rate. The other problem is needing decent hardware to run it at the highest refresh rate in stereoscopic 3D along with higher game settings.

I think many people will become converted if they try it, although I do see a potential problem with take up.

Yep once it becomes more mainstream with people having actually tried it I'm sure interest will increase. Despite the flaws I mentioned above I'm STILL excited about it.

At the moment the Microsoft hololens is the one that interests me most.

Something about that has me re-reading up on it. There was an arcade game some time back that used a similar thing but it was god awful but looked really good, no idea what it was called and I put a couple of quid in to see how it played.

That would be cool and similar I guess to how the holoLens works.

Yeah, Rift was the most hyped but others have leapfrogged them either in functionality or release date, they are going to be hard pressed to stay relevant at this rate

Oculus basically lifted most of their design from Valve's anyway

I was going to jump on an Oculus after trying out a DK2 but seeing the amount of headset's that are coming out i think i will be holding off to see how the dust settle's.
