Patio requires "edging?"

The sub base is very thick, around 5 inches. I'm lifting all the slabs as we speak, I thought I may have been able to do the laying myself and then get it how I want as the hard bit (base) is down).

Removing all the mortar and mixing isn't my idea of fun, so i'll hire a pro. Thanks.

Is the sub base decent concrete and hard, not likely to break up? If so, use Stick like ****, as it's water proof and will bond them together really well. Only problem is it'll be pricey c.f. concrete.

Wouldn't this introduce a hollow under the Slabs? Unless I use a whole tube on each slab. The sub base is hard in general bar a few spots like in the image above.

Not sure if serious but if so I'd say sticking/gluing down each slab this too will not last a cold winter if a week.

The idea was to redo the layout of the slabs which isn't possible as they're all at different heights.

I've got to get it done properly, all destroyed, rubble removed and laid again

Sorry to hear about your experience. Do you know of any good local builders you could maybe contact? Lay it on a little thick and bring out the violin, they may do it for a bit of cash and sort the issue out? A few people I know love the superhero status and will do this for a little bit of publicity on Facebook!

A comparison is we are looking to do a patio approx 30m2 and have been quoted less than £500 for labour and materials needed, we supply the patio... All for cash. This is for 3 days work.

That sounds too good to be true, ive just been quoted double that and I'm in the SE.
Materials alone for this ie cement, sharp sand etc will be half that £500 at least. Plus the jointing. Id steer clear. Unless theyre on £50 pd.

Sorry to hear this story OP. I had a bad experience recently with some Fencers. They also went along the lines of "you don't want to mess with me" and "at one point I was responsible for 70% of the crime in our county"....like you say, with Kids involved, no risks should be taken, even if you do feel deep down like revenge. Karma is a biatch.

Working on top end of £250...£50 of that is VAT, if you have friendly suppliers and dealing with cash you can get this down to £200 maybe a bit less so say £150 - £200 which then leaves £300 - £350 cash for the labour over 3 days. Granted it is a straighforward job being built outfrom the back of house right across so no fancy cutting etc required.

Ok so what material is included in that price then? Sharp Sand, cement, jointing all for £200?!
£300-£350 over 3 days of labour...1 person or 2? That's my angle I'm coming from, seems like a 2 man job and £50 each per day labour. That's less than minimum wage surely.

Or am I not reading this right rofl

Not sure if you saw that it is a complete cash job, 1 man over 3 days. 2 days preparing the ground and 1 day to lay or 1.5 days for each.

Currently the ground is grass so not a great deal of work really needed. It is a guy I know and know his work, not someone knocking on doors or dropping in leaflets.

I am currently converting part of my garage into a fully functioning room for my man room, including installing a window, electrics, cat5e network points, plastering, doors and carpets it will come in at just shy of £1000. If you know the guys locally it can be done on a much much cheaper basis without cutting corners.

I know its not really helping the OP but it just shows you can get good work done for not much money.

Edit: I have just thought though about the location, I guess this could play a big factor in things and this is where the divide really will show.

I see sorry I must have missed your opening line details.

Ive been quoted 1k here in Herts to lay a 30sqm patio and install a sleeper border to the sides, back and back of the patio. Me buying in the materials for around £1650. Indian Sandstone around £800, Sharp Sand £120, EasyJoint £120, Cement £65 and Skip Hire £230, Sleepers £300.

I'm not so sure the £1k labour is as good as it first sounded, probably take them 2-3 days as I'm prepping the sides and taking up the slabs, which will save £250 from the labour.

I've been in touch with the guy who did my drive and he's coming round Wednesday to take a look. He's booked up til the end of August though.

He's asked for his name not to be mentioned on relation to it at all as they've vandalised his van and doesn't want anything to do with them.

Sounds like they're notorious and ruthless.

See this is my problem in life...how do you deal with these kind of people....vandals and ruthless.

Do we all just wait until a "bigger dog" comes along and handles them?! There must be something that will deter these people.

I think the issue is they don't care about having to do time behind bars. How do you reason with people like that?

That's very true that...personally don't know, fighting fire with fire will end you getting burnt as these people love this kind of thing.
Mind the guys that carried out the work on my garden, lets see if Karma plays good. I have my eye watching, always!

They are continuing work today. Trouble is, the actual people doing the work are polish so there's a bit of a language barrier. The grinding out and placing sleepers seems to be the best option at present as they come in 15cm height.
Nm actually read the thread now.

Bad luck with the whole thing, hope you get it sorted without too much financial loss.

This is why I said few pages back if you got family or want your property or car parked in the front to stay intact and want to sleep at night its just not worth the hassle. What ever you have to do to pay them or resolve the issue and move on is best imo.

I know it leaves a bitter taste to swallow but try to remember everyone's been there before, its happen to myself also and lost thousands also. In fact its probably happen to so many people they just keep their gobs shut, this is the reason why no one is prepared to hand over builders contacts any more no one wants the hassle or risk afterwards, their probably all doing bad jobs just to make a quick buck and do a runner. Trading standards or police only support the cowboys (yes I have tried) so they turned out far worse then the actual bad builders imo.

Only advice I can give is take your time searching for qualified and decent tradesman (if any exist) yes they may cost more but its worth it sometimes, also arm yourself with the law, while its unlikely a cowboy builder will go to prison you do have some legal rights and if you are in a position you can use it and still remain protected somewhat also YT and DIY, yes its a chore and no one has time but nothing beats it when you do the same job and at a fraction of the cost and similar results. I know a guy who did a patio and he told me he did it himself just watched YT video 30 times !

They may leave you alone now...But when they do the rounds again in a year or two they may well pay you a visit then.....

Guy came round yesterday and gave me 2 options:

1. Dig out all the mortar they've laid and start again.
2. Take the aco drains out and move them higher, putting appropriate vertical dpm against the house wall.

He was supposed to come back to me with the 2 different quotes today but as of yet haven't heard anything.
