so my gf went to my bank yesterday while i was at work to pay in 60 pound in 2 pound coins(3 bags of 10) she got there and the woman said we dont take coins any more, you can only pay in notes but i will take them this one time.

so all the pennies etc i save in a tub over the years that i pay in every so often, i now cant and looks like i have to take them to that machine in asda to get them changed into notes. that cost 8p per pound.

so it seems ive got to pay 8p for every pound i save.

anyone elses bank do this?

next time i go in and they say that im just gonna close the account and get a new bank because thats the only time i pay in money personaly so i need them to take coins

my bank is halifax btw.

Yeah that sounds a bit ridiculous to be honest, try emailing/ringing around if it's that big a problem, I'm sure you'll be able to get an answer.

Those 'Coinstar' machines are quite fun to use though :D

If it happens in future, ask to speak to the manager. Clarify the bank's position and then make it clear why you are moving your account to another provider.

Although tbh 7p in the pound is a bargain for a go on the kerchunk-kerchunk machine, I love it :)

Do you believe that other people should pay for your expensive to process (and uncommon) banking habit?

Processing large amounts of coins takes a fair bit more time that processing notes or electronic transfers, someone's got to pay for your choice, should it be you or everyone else?

Moot point. We wouldn't have coins at all if it were an issue.

The bank will still use the money you deposit to further their own profits so why not!

Oh no! I've been saving up my pennies for a new monitor - whenever I get home all the coins in my pocket go in a big pot. I've got over £150 in coins in there now (saved over about 4 months) and I don't want to give 7% to some machine for the privilege :(

Is Haliax actually a bank? Or is it similar to polytech's being universities now?

AFAIK the difference between a bank and a building society is who owns it, shareholders in the banks case, members in the building society case. So the Halifax is a bank now.

My uncle owns and runs a leisure business that supplies pool tables and fruit machines. Every week he gets bags and bags and bags of coins and his bank has absolutely no problem whatsoever about taking it.

When my dad gets home I will ask what bank he uses as he sometimes does the bank run for my uncle.

I'd imagine he's a business banking customer who pays appropriate charges and annual fees for the various services it provides though...

They used to a Building Society but they converted to Bank a while ago. Lot of publicity at the time cause loads of customers landed a windfall when they converted.

Yet another Bank who are cutting back on services.
