Paypal on BBC1

30+ emails complaining about ebay / paypal must be a tiny percentage of overall users. I hate this type of program as they never tell you what percentage of users are dissatisfied. As far as any of us know, this coould be 1% and we don't know how many of these are their own fault etc.

Watchdog is load of rubbish as they never actually resolve anything

Not quite, it was 30+ a week. Remember these are just the people that have been stung badly enough, and are the type of people to email Watchdog to start with. Lots of people will just take the hit, some will go to other consumer groups, some will post endless threads about it in discussion forums. I don't like Watchdog much, but I think they did a good thing by taking this Paypal thing to a wider audience.

I opened up a paypal account a few years back, but right after I did my debit card got nicked by a scally jumping through my window. Thus I had a new card number, and when I tried to use it paypal wouldn't let me. Oh well. I've constantly bought of ebay and it's not really stopped me. The only thing that it has perhaps hindered is me buying cheapo stuff from Honk Kong or Chinese sellers. Nadda problem

I think the fact that PayPal and eBay are such close bedfellows will be their downfall. They shirk responsibility at every opportunity and it's far too easy to lose out to a scammer. Their reputations have taken a hammering over the last couple of years and the first person to come up with a reputable alternative will make a killing.

Slightly worrying given that yesterday I made my first ever purchase on ebay, using paypal :(

Useless :( Lost 60 quid myself, sold a phone in perfect working order

6 Months down the line, guy on ebay breaks it by doing god knows what, complains to paypal, gets his money back

And I get a 6 month older, smashed to pieces phone, with him claiming it was 'unfit for its job, as it broke due to an electrical fault' spose it wouldnt function elecrtonically if it had been ran over :(

When you recieve money through paypal put it in the bank asap so paypal cant touch it.

I am almost sure they just put a negative amount on your account and then send the debt collectors after you?.... i could be wrong however

Verify your account which in my case included setting up a direct debit.

What is my withdrawal limit?

Some members can withdraw money prior to becoming verified. You can view your withdrawal limit from your Limits page. Once you become verified, your withdrawal limit is increased or lifted depending on your county of residence. To view the limits associated with your account, please follow these steps:

# Log in to your PayPal account.
# Click the View Limits link next to the Balance Information box.
# Click the lift this limit link.
# Complete the steps on the To Do list to lift the Withdrawal Limit.

edit: Why can't you add a bank account? I think a friend of mine managed to verify his account using a credit card, so that might be worth a try.

They can indeed :(

Gives you more of a chance to fight the case if they can't get hold of the money straight away though I guess.

Well considering no one ever gets their money back from fradulent sellers because they take their money out of their paypal account, I think we can safetly assume that debt collectors wont be coming round.

Added to that the fact you dont need a bank account to use paypal, they might just transfer the funds to someone elses paypal account, paypal will never get the money back because there was no registered bank account for that paypal account and someone else has the money.

Don't eBay own Paypal?

They own Skype as well

The registration and setting up is far too lame imho. Email address and some other gubbins is all that is needed to get set up on there

Well this is some first post  Hello all,

Just reading through this and worrying as i have paypal linked to my bank account and it doesn't sound to secure.

However on the subject of debt collectors ..... A while ago i sold some items on ebay but forgot (honest!) to pay the auction fees. 3 months down the line, as i didn't use ebay much at all, i got a letter from XYZ debt collectors. So they must use these tactics sometimes.

I cleared the debt then and there but surely the comany can apply the same process to negative paypal accounts.

All in all i've had mixed experiences with selling abd buying, not receiving goods, placing claims and having claims placed against me ..... but i continue to use it, so it cant have been that bad

any time I sell on Ebay, I put very clearly throughout the listing that because of the way Paypal conducts its business, I wont accept paypal.

I do the same and I know many others who do as well, this must cause eBay to rethink Paypal and prehaps give it a new lease of life with more secure fraud protection.

I heard so many bad things about paypal recently. Thanks to this thread i have had enough and have closed my account. I feel much more at easy now!
