I've been interested in making a pc case from scratch for a while as my current case (cit vantage warlord..or something) is shoddy and feels too snaked and cramped which also will affect the cooling.
I have looked at cases especially bitfenix however they usually have a few features I like yet do not tick all my boxes.
I have found some parts however I need help on how to start as I'm completely lost and can't find a tutorial...

you dont really need a tutorial!! you can let your imagination go wild!!!

the only measurements you really need are :

motherboard (where the pci-e slots are and where the holes for the standoffs are, both are easily googleable (is googleable a word?... it is now) )
PSU, again, just the screw holes.

Everything else is up to you really!

This sounds like it could be a really interesting project, and certainly one I'll be keeping an eye on. You could have course use your motherboard tray from your current case, and then build a new case around that tray.

you see some custom build cases that use a motherboard tray either bought or just cut from an old case as the starting point. that way the slots and mounts are correct. the rest is up to you.

I have a few questions...what tools should I use as I'll have to buy or rent them and can anyone give me a link to a tooless hdd/ssd rack as I'm struggling to find one

Thanks for all the replies

Depends what your making your case out of as to what tools to use really.

If your making your own case, I wouldn't bother with a toolless cage tbh. I'd plan out where I wanted them first, then do it that way, maybe even incorporate one of the USB drive caddies if you want to have a hot swap bay.

You quite litterally can do what you want! I wouldn't like to use too much pre built stuff else you might as well just use a pre built case lol

Like Davido has said, its not a really something there can be a definitive tutorial on. The best you can do is look at other 'from scratch' cases and deicide your approach from there.

The Bit-Tech Mods of the Month section is a good source of inspiration. Depending on the design of your case.

Firstly you need a deisgn, and a viable method of manufacture.

If you look at the Parvum cases these are simple shapes of plastic with threaded inserts (to allow the case to bolt together). This is as simple as things get (and Parvum did a great job at understanding their customer base) and can work absolute wonders.

You can do the same with metal too, just bend a lip into the side and use a push fit insert. This is the way most Lian Li cases are deisgned. My V351 was beautiful and (with flat, bolt on side panels) such a simple design.

Lian Li use aluminum and I suggest you look at doing the same as steel is quite heavy.

That being said I don't know the extent or design you are going for. :)

I'm in the middle of my own scratch case,
I'd say buy a dremel, a real one, It'll be no end of useful.
Also do a log, throw drawings around, get opinions.
Other people have an ability to see a flaw you've overlooked
