PC died - Trying to figure out which part is broken - Advice needed please

Just wanted to let you guys know what I've decided to do, I'm going to get a new PC today because this is day 5 without a PC and so I cant bare it any longer lol.

I'm going to take the motherboard back to the shop I got it from tomorrow and say that I think its faulty and can they test it, and am still going to fix my old PC and I'll have two PC's then and I'll message you back as soon as I solve this problem.

For my old PC I'm going to put a new motherboard in a new case because my friend has a brand new case we ordered from ocuk for £65 and its proper sexy as he was going to build a PC and bought the case first but then decided to go on holiday instead so he no longer had any money to buy the rest of the parts so hes giving me that case.

It might be a few weeks before I post back about the old PC but I promise you I wont forget to let you know once its up and running again because I appreciate all your help.

I'm just putting this whole situation down as being unlucky and having two motherboards brake/short.

Thanks again. :)

Good idea. It's frustrating not being able to solve a problem, but I think I'd be climbing the walls if I'd been without a working PC for nearly a week! Lucky coincidence on the case... definitely let us know how it goes!

Just bought myself a new GFX card and power supply, these are the only 2 components which I haven't switched for new parts, so hopefully my 3 months of not having a PC will come to an end...

I'll post back aswell if the problem is fixed at my end :)

Yeah defo let us know man...sheesh 3 months? how have you coped lol, I only went 5 days and it almost killed me lol.

...I just got a new PC tonight from comit, been setting it up since 9:30...you'll never guess what, I just bought the tower yeah, and I was thinking, oh well this will be the first time ever in my life where I buy a tower ready made, and so all I have to do is plug it in a switch it on, but guess what, not that easy lol, it only had VGA port on back and I only have DVI cable for my monitor, so I was like OMG!!! Had to do a god damn DIY job and start taking bits out and putting bits in. spent over an hour on it before I could switch it on.

So put my old graphics card in, and then guess what! the PSU that comes with this HP tower from comet is rubish and has like 3 wires, litterally, and doesnt have a wire for graphics card, so put my old PSU in aswell, my "corsair 650w", turned it on and everything has worked fine since, so just been installing windows updates, codecs, drivers, software, steam, BC2!! lol ever since.

Even tho its a tower from comet and its HP, I checked out the CPU online and the ram, it looks pretty decent tbh, and now that I've put my graphics card in and sound card I got awesome graphics and sound to go with a great CPU and ram.

Its got 4gig DDR3 ram, my old ram was DDR2 from 3 years ago, and the CPU is AMD X3 @ 3.1GHZ, my old CPU was intel quad core 2GHZ.

So it basically had the speed without the graphics but I sorted that out with my old stuff. Havent tried a game yet but I'll check out some FPS action with BC2 and let you guys know what fps am getting tomorrow.

Regarding my old PC thats still broken, going to shop in morning and taking mobo back, if its broken and am gona see if I can get a replacement.

Also friend is bringing new case round tomorrow, I want to take the hardware out of this crap HP case and move it into a real case.

I would be embaressed if someone came round now and saw this PC in this case lol.

A PC from comet *cringes* hehe
You should have slapped up a cheap 'spec me' thread and then done some comparisons with that comet built seeing as you've put your PSU and GFX card in then you must just be using the mobo, cpu and ram that came with it?

That old one is a bit of a mystery - sounds like some real faulty hardware issues. Nice to know it definatly wasnt your old PSU and Graphics seeing as their now serving you in your new PC. I have a feeling the cheap mobo/cpu/ram you got from the shop might not have been good?
If you dont mind my asking how much did you spend in total on spare parts + comet PC ?
Hope your new build it working out :)

Ok, Installed my new GFX card and power supply today and still the problem remains... The only difference now is that instead of there being 1/4 cpu phase mode LED's on at the top of the MOBO, there's now 4/4. Also after around 15 seconds of the PC being switched on, it shutsdown and restarts itself (Which also didnt happen before, it used to just stay on)

I'm now currently browsing overclockers for a new motherboard (again) because I think that i've been extremely unlucky with 2 dead MOBO's... I will request a refund for the current MOBO and probably pay a little more for a ASUS board, instead of my current MSI P67A-C45 Intel P67.

--------- Thing's I've changed ----------
New GFX Card
New Power Supply
New CPU
New RAM
New MOBO (Same as my old one but it's the B3 Revision)

No let me explain, when I was trying to fix my old PC I bought a new HDD for £30, a new mobo for £30, a new PSU for £30, a new second hand duel core CPU for £15 and one stick of memory for £8...I've already taken back the CPU, PSU, and memory and got money back for those 3. Now I just need to take back motherboard and PSU which am going to do either today or tomorrow.

So spent £123 on parts but I've got £53 back so far and just need to collect the £60 today.

And then the PC from comet is just a tower, no keyboard, mouse, monitor, just tower...so all am using in that tower is mobo/ram/cpu and the ram and cpu are really good, I'd say a lot better then my old rig that was over 3 years old anyway.

I've gone from
4GB DDR2
intel quad core q8200 @ 2GHZ

to

4GB DDR3
AMD Athlon X3 @ 3.1GHZ

Not sure about what motherboard the new one has, prob just a cheapy but my old mobo was a cheapy anyways.

In the new case I've put in my old corsair PSU, my old ATI HD 5770 1GB PCI-Express and my X-FI Extreme 5.1 PCI-Express.

So if I'd of got home and for and some reason not been able to put my graphics card and sound card in this case, I would have been dissapointed and yeah this PC would have sucked, it would have had speed from the CPU/ram but without the graphics capability to run games...but now its actually turned out to be a really good PC.

Am happy with it anyways, its turned out so much better then I expected.

Guess should just consider it as I spent £350 for mobo/cpu/ram and then I've just put in £60 PSU £150 gfx and £40 sound card.

So now I got speed, I got good graphics, I got amazing sound. I tried BC2 and couldnt believe how smooth it was. My last PC ran all games in high settings, every game you can think of, BC2, resident evil, assasins creed, dirt 3, duke nukem forever, AVP, mafia 2, crysis 2 everything you can think of. But my frame rate in games like BC2 especially would be around 40fps...

When I been playing BC2 on this PC I been getting 50-80fps on huge maps with 31 people in big open areas, only tried it for 5 mins last night before going to bed but it just felt so smooth, more smooth then ever before, felt amazing and really fluid.

I don't know much about AMD CPU's coz I been going Intel for past 6 years or so. I know with the intel side that the good CPU's are called i3, i5, i7, those are latest ones, but didnt know anything about these AMD ones or what they were equivalent to...but read some reviews online and it looks like a really good CPU.

Think its got 3 cores and 1.5mb cache memory.

Besides I didnt have any money at moment and thats why I used comet card so can pay later...usually I wouldnt have dreamed of buying a PC from comet or PC world lol, this is first time in my life I done this.

I usually order all parts separate and build it myself.

Am happy anyways, got a new PC, its faster then my old one, and not really spent that much as some people spend thousands.

Oh last thing tho, incase you didnt read above, am pretty confident both motherboards are broke and thats why neither setup worked, its the only explanation that makes any sort of sense, and when I take the motherboard back to the shop am going to ask them to test it, if they confirm then we've solved this whole problem, and I'll get a replacement and then job done, got two PC's.

The mobo will have onboard sound and gfx but prob wont use it for now, I'll wait a few months and then put my old gfx and sound back in it, and then upgrade this PC with new gfx and sound.

EDIT: Forgot to say, my friend is bringing me a brand new amazing case today, I ordered it for him from OCUK months ago but he didnt use it, I'm wanting to transfer the PC out of this case into the new case and then it will look like a proper good PC and have better cooling. I cant remember which one I chose for him on OCUK shop but i'll post back later to show you which one when he brings it.

Cheers people. :D

ok kool. it sux that you had to shell out for a new pc. something definatly not right somewhere but you had pretty much built a new pc and were still at square one.

Yeah ya know what aswell, am kinda scared to use my old ATX power cable or my old case again incase they brake another motherboard...Am I just being stupid there or do you think am right to throw them away?

wait til you here back about the mobo. if they say thats dead then you can then either assume it was a DOA mobo or your case killed it.

without mentioning the name, what do the shop you purchased the psu/mobo from do? they might be able to test your other stuff too.

Their a shop that sell cheap hardware like OCUK, its quite a big company, I usually pretty much only use OCUK and this other shop, they fix PC's too but charge £50 minimum fee just to diagnose...I dont really want to pay like a newbie.

We pretty much went over everything didnt we the first 4 days I was without a PC, we went through a whole checklist of things and put our heads together. I dont think we did anything wrong, I think we were just unlucky with having two motherboards not work for some reason.

£50  our place is a free assement/diagnosis.
yeh i agree, you pretty built a whole new pc and got exactly the same issues, so something is amiss somewhere. 2 faulty mobos would be very unlucky, but possible. the more plausable reason would be the case or something else killed the old and new (if the new mobo is indeed faulty) one.

I've got nothing in that old case right now, I been looking all around it, holding it upside down, gave it a shake, cant find any loose screws or anything wrong with it, I think it was just a cheap £30 case tho, I never really paid a lot for cases in past...but I've changed my thinking on that over years, because I want one with good cooling and lots of space etc.

What the...it sounds like me and you have gone through exact same thing, and your going through all same checklist as I went through.

Can't believe we're both thinking that we both got two dead mobo's lol, this is just weird.

Well mate, we both in this together, to the very end! we shall prevail! Hopefully we both get it sorted.

Indeed we are!, I'm hoping that both your MOBO's are dead, then at least we know that's the problem haha :)
