PC game Loot crates for real money, good or bad?

It's not just willpower tho, i Don't like being taken for a dik it's principal, If Samsung sold me a T.V that the remote came with only 2 of its buttons, you can buy the rest of them or every 150 hrs of watching Samsung will let me open a bag a grab a random button to put in my shiny new remote that i have i would like to think i would not buy there T.V. It's not that i don't want to watch T.V but i ain't gonna be bent over to do it.

I sort of do that with Sky, I pay for Sky but then if I want to watch the football live I have to pay extra and then if I want to want the movies I have to pay extra and so on. Sky has so many bolt ons that my Sky bill is around £100 a month now to get everything lol.

It's absolutely rife and with EA now and FIFA, their ultimate team mode now makes far more on it's own than the game itself, it's some ridiculous number they make from FIFA points every year so people can buy packs.

The new battlefront from the angryjoe rant looks like you have to acquire everything through loot crates instead of being able to play and unlock with skill.

Seems to be the recent trend.

You can get all of it through play, its just that you would need to play quite a lot to get enough credits to unlock enough loot crates. Which I suppose is fine if you are going to put 100 hours into the game, though I would imagine that I'd get bored of the game after about 30-40 hours.

You can buy those with in game stuff though, even though it looks like an insanely slow process to getting them.
One thing I thought they'd done right (possibly the only thing, aside from the gfx) was that you all get same amount regardless of skill. Sure, it'd be good for skilled players to get more, but then those that aren't good get left behind.

I do think there's different elements of this that get blended together in a lot of cases.

Big DLC/season passes. Where large chunks of the game are dolled out over time, which can be done well and badly. an example of it done well is in witcher 3 where a while after the full game came out a whole new expansion was released with bunches of new stuff. an example of it done badly is the first destiny where a largely unfinished game is released and then they charge you for the rest of it.

mini dlc/micro transaction. like buying individual costumes and other minor things, again can be done well and badly. Pay to win, being the bad way of doing this, specially when not paying means you can't win.

Loot boxes. this is the one where the gambling comes in, in a lot of cases they are just adding an addicting element to the game in order to fleece money out of people, and in some cases the pay to win elements are mixed into the loot boxes. And this is really what the petition is about, and I think this needs to be looked at. The psychological effects of this sort of thing is well known, and is already regulated in most cases. I hope the message gets through to the people who need to know about it.

If a game you pay full price for comes with a loot crate system that gives even the slightest advantage, I just refuse to buy that game. There's plenty more to be getting on with.

Would've said I hope this doesn't become a thing, but it's been en route for quite some time :/

Magicka: Wizard Wars (R.I.P.), even when it finally went F2P open to all, had purchasable things you could buy which gave skins/robes/weapons that you could slowly get in game, but they gave bonuses (& negatives) but also top tier magicks, so I refused to buy any despite wanting some of the funky looking robes (even though I had ring of nullify to remove all stats).

Battlerite (shudder) does chests in its F2P game, but at least they're only cosmetic (that's all chests should ever be!).

Similarly, BF3 (boring pve, fun pvp) did those boosts to get your weapons faster, so I refused to purchase & refused any following BF games. Would've been passable if pve side only, but not when in pvp too.

I won't be grabbing any games that do anything of the sort, but have seen that loads still are, so devs will just continue with it & more will join in :(

Some of this made sense in my head, probably not here though ;)

Thats the thing for me, I dont think anything will change. I dont believe for a moment that enough people will boycott such titles so I believe that the situation will not only continue but will increase. Now, given thats my belief, I then have a choice, I can deprive myself of playing potentially very good games and thus miss out on the fun of those and nothing will change, or I can still buy the games and have the fun and nothing will change. Either way, imo, nothing will change, so I opt to not deprive myself of the fun. Now for some of course that means I am just contributing to the problem but I really dont think that me not buying will make any difference whereas me not getting to play some fun titles actually has a bigger impact on my life than the slim possibility that me not buying titles will.

There're so many other good titles on the market, that it's relatively easy to avoid loot crate urine-takers. Nothing will ever change, because publishers are fully aware that gamers are all mouth, no trousers (and endless wallets).

If you're paying full retail for free to play game mechanics, I'd really not be able to enjoy that game.

These days I never pay full retail for any game (not with stuff like CDKeys and Kinguin around) but as long as I am having fun with gameplay, co-op, multiplayer and/or storyline, nothing "external" will stop me enjoying myself. (if I'm not having fun with those things of course then thats a different kettle but then if it wasnt a fun game I wouldnt have bought it in the first place to be fair)

I thought people were barking mad to pay for packs like in FUT (and still do)..its an addiction and not a healthy one. I wont be buying any games which are dominated by loot crates/gambling. Its bad thats its endemic in so many AAA games now.

They are just taking the **** If they the major AAA game publishers really want to "herd" us down this path then **** it ...that'll just turn me to the darkside... I will never accept *their* choice ...i will create my own.

I just feel people will accept this because they will feel they have no choice and if they like the game...all too soon it will be normal and i will be going...."when i were a lad....gaming never used to be like this"

so yo ho ho it is.....

This will be in all games going forward from large Publishers, even if they have to crowbar it in (Shadow of War), because the amounts of games releasing with these systems in them is increasing as it obviously makes money.

Do you think its in anyway linked to combatting piracy or just a money grab. Pirated games that cant go online can access a whole host of features like this.

.....ignoring the typo, should be "cant" access a whole host of features like this. :)

Unsure how bad piracy is this days, personally I buy all my games these days because of more reasonable prices on the whole, steam sales, bundles, offers. In my youth I did used to acquire a fair few games though.

For the games that take my fancy now, I'll either buy them or just wait until I hear that they are a miserable cash-grab (which happens all too frequently).
Going through to unplayed library of games I have also saves the day.

If anything, loot boxes would make me more likely to consider piracy.

It's the combination of DLC/Season passes AND Microtransactions/Loot boxes that really create an issue with game pricing. They're using the free to play model to generate even more cash on their AAA games.

I don't trust the government with anything regarding the Internet or gaming, so I won't be signing. Wanting to ban encryption tells us everything you need to know about them. They'll probably somehow use it as an excuse to ban certain games or something equally as stupid.
