A councillor who disagreed with a decision to start flying a union jack in a Nottinghamshire village only on special occasions, has threatened to resign.

John Harbury-Carlisle, of Holme Pierrepont and Gamston Parish Council, said he felt "strongly" the flag should be flying constantly on the village green, since it was put up to celebrate the Royal wedding in April.

Parish councillor Diane Kidger said councillors decided it would now only be flown on special occasions, after receiving complaints from residents.

Lost for words, Liberals and PC is the death of this country. My village has a flag flying all year round at the WW2 monument for as long as I can remember. Had to laugh at the BNP headquarters statement.

"how would you feel if I flew a Caribbean flag all the time?"

Sure go for it when you are back in the Caribbean

It's amazing the attitude people in this country have towards our flag. Go to America and many households proudly fly the American flag. Even bus companies display it on the side of buses.

Yet over here it's perceived completely differently :(

My workplace flies the Saltire but it gets changed to that piece of toilet paper that is the Union Jack on certain days. Yep, I disagree with not being able to fly your countries flag at all times. Go find yourself a George Cross.

Theres some fuel to the fire. :p

When I was at school, I was asked to remove the union jack flag from my window because a parent had complained that it was overly nationalistic. It was perfectly ok for some other kids to have the rusing sun, or the hammer and sickle, or the DDR.
Go figure, spineless do-gooders who'd rather eat their own **** than entertain the possibility that someone might not be offended about something that they could be offended on that persons behalf.

I totally agree. I wish we took a page out of the yank's book here tbh.

Apparently it's a union flag - it's only a union jack when on a boat... Or so I heard!

The term 'Union Jack' possibly dates from Queen Anne's time (r. 1702-14), but its origin is uncertain.

It may come from the 'jack-et' of the English or Scottish soldiers, or from the name of James I who originated the first union in 1603.

Another alternative is that the name may be derived from a proclamation by Charles II that the Union Flag should be flown only by ships of the Royal Navy as a jack, a small flag at the bowsprit; the term 'jack' once meant small.
It is often stated that the Union Flag should only be described as the Union Jack when flown in the bows of a warship, but this is a relatively recent idea. From early in its life the Admiralty itself frequently referred to the flag as the Union Jack, whatever its use, and in 1902 an Admiralty Circular announced that Their Lordships had decided that either name could be used officially. Such use was given Parliamentary approval in 1908 when it was stated that "the Union Jack should be regarded as the National flag".

I just heard the above from someone in the navy. I quite like the idea that it changes name on a boat.

I'm going to change my name next time I'm on a boat.

Yep. Some poeple I've spoken to over there were surprised to find out flying your own flag in the UK is a blackhole of sorts!
