My thinking is this

if you can build a VR games system , it will work just as well for non-VR too

my current system :

AMD 3600
AMD 5700 XT
Corsair Vengeance 16Gb RAM
MSI 570x Tomahawk motherboard

Tempted to drop a 5800X3D in to replace the 3600
but if i did that, the GPU would be limited

i use VD on default settings all the time, and im happy with HL Aylx , Elite Dangerous though could do with an upgrade (Fighting thargoids around stations/planets is impossible as the FPS tanks)

What would you guys suggest in upgrading ?

the Quest 3 / Deckard is going to have higher resolution screens, so I'm going to be left behind

The default VD settings aren't the best for AMD cards. Use the HEVC codec and then set the resolution to whatever it recommends for your class of card. You should change the bitrate to whatever works best for you. And, try spliced encoding on and off to see which to prefer.

If you can only afford to upgrade one thing, get a GPU. The 5700XT isn't great and it's not the best for VR either.

But, I wouldn't be in a rush upgrading. Prices are terrible right now.

Disable automatic bitrate and set the codec to HEVC on that screen.

That's only the streamer settings though. The other settings can only be changed when you start virtual desktop. So ?I would need to see your settings from inside virtual desktop.

i just tried HL Alyx

changed the desktop streamer to HVEC

first time I've played this since taken out the glasses spacer though, so might be a coincidence

but on my right lens, the image is overlapping right on the edge far right
left lens, no problem

Changing the Codec has nothing got to do with the overlapping image. That's stereo overlap. Since it's different in both eyes, that tells me that the headset isn't on straight. The lenses are closer to one eye. The glasses spacer moves your eyes further from the lenses so you aren't seeing the overlap.

Make sure you disable automatic bitrate on the streamer.

Your settings inside virtual desktop itself are ok. Would try and change the VR bitrate though to something higher. Try 100 and see what latency is like and work from there.

something is wrong

ANY steam VR game i play
tried walkabout and HL so far, and im distorting on the right
not happened before now

ill try resetting back to how i had it, then start again
lets get this distortion corrected first

No, just put back in the glasses spacer. It's nothing to do with settings in Virtual desktop.

EDIT: It's either a physical deformity in the headset, or the headset isn't sitting right on your face, you just didn't notice before because you had the glasses spacer in.

also :

(old drivers only i think this refers to)

Virtual Desktop: The only app that works BUT the encoder has to be H264 otherwise you will crash in games, in SteamVR, some at the moment of loading like Hellsplit: Arena, or other like GORN or Into the Radius will crash after a few minutes or hours and when it happens you will be lucky if you don't need to reboot the system in order to get the Adrenalin menu to work again or steam to launch a game properly.

Sorry, I didn't realise that Pico had more problems with AMD than the Quest 2 had. I know we had solved your earlier distortion/crashing problem with Virtual Desktop and Steam games by changing to an earlier driver.
