PC Powers down ??!!?! :(

First thing that comes to mind is dust buildup around coolers.

Just open up your pc and attack it with a can of compressed air or if you're feeling adventurous a vacuum cleaner.

Even if its not the problem it is worthwhile doing it every now and then.

Have you got any kind of temperature checking software (everest, rivatuner, speedfan) to let you know whether your graphics card is overheating?

I'd check for temperatures, and then I'd have a look at what the PSU is giving out in regard to power on its rails. What PSU do you have an how old is it? Sounds to me like it could well be a faulty PSU, or one that on its way out.

umm what kinda temps are good/bad etc im running a c2d 2140, 8800gts and 2gbs ram... Ive got a tagan x psu, its quite old so it may be that. How could i check the rails?!?!

For temperatures get the program - Everest. Well you're CPU shouldn't be getting over 70C and GPU shouldn't go any higher than 85C+.

If you say you've just come back from a LAN event it is possible something was disturbed when moving your pc around. I'd re-seat everything just to make sure, including the CPU Heat sink.

The cpu cooler has probably become dislodged, try refitting it back on and check temps in speedfan or similar.

Have you done as everyone has said, and checked the temperatures? See if they rise etc? That's the first thing to do.

If they are rising, and its something like the cpu, re-seat the cpu heatsink nd see if that helps / re-apply some thermal compound.

After that it may very well be a dodgey PSU sadly.

But try the above first, it could just be the fact your pc was knocked on your way back from the LAN and the heatsink on the cpu or something has got a bit loose.

Jeez how many times do you have to tell someone to check the temperature lol. I would remove your heatsink, remove any thermal paste and put some new stuff on.
