I have a pc problem - if anyone could help shed some light on to it, it would be much appreciated.

When the computer turns on - fans go, hdd starts up but no post. and no post code either - i've tried removing and putting the memory back in, i've tried using a single stick instead of 2, tried resetting cmos, taking out and replacing cmos battery.

havent tried - taking out gfx card and testing in another pc, taking out and putting in the cpu.

I have a black screen in all of these situations - although one time I only had one stick in and it booted fine. but this was one time out of 15 odd attempts and i havent been able to recreate the boot.

Also i have removed everything from the computer and tried booting with only the keyboard and screen - still no avail.

System config - dfi infinity 975x, c2d e6600, single 8800gtx, 2gb geil pc6400 ram - dual channel config, psu - fsp sparkle 750w, creative xfi xtreme music.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Do you have access to another computer with components you can test/try in your rig? (This would be the ideal - and the quickest way to rule out components)

If possible it would be good to try some other memory or a PSU in the rig - especially the memory as you had the above success with one stick.

If you haven't got any access to the above try removing all the memory from the MB and see if you get any error beeps (case/MB speaker permitting.)

You could try ruling out the PSU as a possible fault by testing it - here's a link to HUddy's site for a guide - link scroll down to the PSU headings.

Also, is this a new system to you or has it developed the fault recently? If it's a developed fault - have you added any new components recently or noticed any prior minor problems leading up to the present problem?

If the PSU checks out and you haven't got any test components to hand (plus the removal of memory test) - i would rebuild the system outside of the case and run a skeleton setup to see if you can boot into the BIOS - and then work on form there.

EDIT: Check that the MB is secure and check all your connections - disconnect them all, look them over and then re-attach. Plus, while you're trying all this; disconnect all non essential components - hdd, dvd, usb devices etc and only have 1 stick memory installed (preferably in the slot that worked.).

the system is an old one built by parts from here a few years ago. I havent had any problems since until just recently. I shall begin attempting the suggestions listed to see if i have any luck with it.

Unfortunately i have no direct access to spare parts - am sourcing some from friends at the minute.

In terms of beep codes - received none at all, tried everything.

PSU - seems to be fine - but will run a few more checks as suggested on the site.

Thanks Plec - this should be plenty to go on for a while. you're help is much appreciated :).

Could you clarify the above:

Did you remove 'all' the memory and not get any error beeps codes at all? (It's really important that you, also, confirm whether or not you have a case/MB speaker wired up.)

If you do have case/MB speaker and did not get any error beeps with the above test - remove the gfx card and see if you get any error beeps.
