PC Upgrade

Hi all,

I posted a little while back to get a rig specced, but fell short of funds when I came to buy. Now I has fundage, and would like to upgrade my PC.

I have an ASUS 560Ti which I would like to keep, and a decent PSU. Need ta new MB, CPU, Ram & SSD. Primary use is for gaming. I have an Antec 900 case, have considered replacements, but not if it sacrifices build quality of components.

I have a budget of 5-700, obviously the lower I can achieve what I want, the better Not ventured in w\c before, and not really feeling brave enough to yet. O\C wise, not looking to massively clock anything, as I want a rig that can hopefully game happily for 4-5 years. Massive oc's tend to restrict this type of lifespan

Any questions / options please

You have the budget to go to an i7 but if you're primary purpose is gaming then I wouldn't recommend the expense.
CPU cooling would be dependent on if you decide to upgrade case; a larger case would allow for a larger cooler.

The motherboard could be upgraded to the Z77-D3H which has SLI/Crossfire support but long term you'd gain more advantage from upgrading to a single, newer generation, card.

Grab the 840 over the 830. Also don't need that RAM, complete waste if your gaming.

Grab a K2 cooler and it will perform brilliantly!

when you sayt a larger case,, the 900 is a pretty big case

Agree i7 not needed, but I would have thought an unlocked i5 would go better?

also agree, 16GB of ram is overkill, 8GB should be fine?

Mobo allows Xfire/SLI, what PSU do you have? Cooler is designed to be quiet and comes with easy clip on brackets for the fan (extra set to mount 2nd fan). Good sized SSD to fill with games, the 830 is good. There is an 840 and the 840 Pro, the later is obviously better (review)

Re my last post - i missed the "k" on the cpu.

Good to see you both picked same cpu & ssd, looks like a nice clear choice there Looks like Gigabyte are still the winners for the motherboard contender, nice to see as I do like their products.

My psu is a thermaltake toughpower 750W. It could run SLi, but i don't really want to spend twice the money on gcards to not get twice the bang, would rather just wait a few years and upgrade then if i have to..

I was looking at either the H80 or maybe even the H100 by corsair for a heatsink, or would this be overkill if i'm not going to melt my cpu?

Soo, I can upgrade the SSD to the 840, as it's on discount this weekend, it's cheaper than the 830.

How reliable is the Z77X-D3H / Z77-D3H for stable overclocking? I was considering the Z77X-UD5H but if I can save around £60, it's a winner.
I've been tempted by cases, I really like the stealth cabling options on the 800D, but it's a massive beast, and quite costly. As i'm not going to be water cooling, I wouldn't really benefit from the size. Is there a similar case that I could do a nice tidy install, but not as large? A dust filter would be an added bonus.

Also, for some icing on this cake, could I get a recommendation for a 2.1 set for gaming? Trying to stick < £100 for speakers.

Edit: If I can O/C well using the Z77-D3H, it's definiately looking good, I won't e using SLi.

This case is on offer this week, not sure on the speakers as I'm a headphone user myself, but these seem to have good reviews

The cable runs on the BitFenix do not seem to be any improvement on my currennt Antec 900, thanks for the options tho.

If the Z77-D3H truly is that good for an o/c, it'd do me nicely, as I don't intend to go much over4.

It is a good board, first thing you will need to do is update the bios, i would do that before you even install windows, it needs the F18 bios version, previous versions had so many bugs.

OK, so how's this little lot below looking?

Would the H80i run silent, or is it even worth looking at the H100i? I've looked around the forum and the 650D should fit the larger cooler from the top.

If this build is all good to finish, should I change any fans on the case?

The H80i seems to be a big improvement over the H80, mostly down to the SP120 fan that now comes with it. If you're going with such a sexy windowed case, it might be worth spending a bit more and getting something like a Z77X-D3H to compliment it With regards to changing the stock fans on the case I have seen some people saying the front fan is too noisy, but I would say try it out first and change it if you need to

Not a bad thought...hadn't actually considered how the MB would look

The Z77X-D3H does look kinda nice in black, would compliment the case quite nicely.

Not a happy bunny. Parts arrived and the top of my case is obliterated.

Now to wait while rma is raised / processed etc.
