as the new 5x series GPUs are on their way at the end of this month
looking for VR specific, how much VRAM do you need going forward ?

i game at 2K, so 16Gb would be ok, but what about VR ?

is 16Gb going to be enough to run games in VR with like the highest or close to high settings ?

i hear No Mans Sky needs more than 16Gb (as an example)

Thoughts ?

24gb if not all you can eat..
remember the crysis joke?
altought im just taking a random stab.
combination of hybride work loads tbh, from AI / VR / Generative AI for dynamic games that adapt to players / small LLM models for NPC and the like.
grahpics cards arent just graphics cards any more.

realisically i think something like doulbe the 4090 in the next 10years.
edit 5090 with 32gb ram so 64gb in a few years but more complex than that.

level design and detailing potentally will be carried out more with generative ai modelling which will allow quick level design with much more details enviroments and fleshed out content (think back allays and what trash might be on the floor you can pick up, or what might be in a dumpster).
more details enviroments and higher texture packs i guess mean more VRAM

When people say no one needs a 5090 for gaming or a 4090 even, they obviously don't know about VR lol! As much RAM as possible imo, I've heard MSFS can use a lot, Stalker 2 with the UEVR mod makes a 4090 look weak going by what people have said.

Not sure if I'm buying a 5000 series tbh, I had a 3090 and a 4090 but £2k for a 5090, not sure if I can justify that especially as I don't play a lot of PCVR, would still love to have 1 of course. I think 16GB would be min VRAM for me now if I buy into a high end GPU.

The rasterization performance of the 5090 afaik is about 30-40% more than the 4090, yes DLSS performance is miles better but won't apply to us in VR (although I think Cyberpunk with Luke Ross's VR mod can use DLSS?). 40% more £2k? If money was no object then deffo yeah but...

I've seen modded Skyrim VR go above 11gb. I imagine if you went to 4k textures and very high resolution rendering that could go above 16gb.

One things for certain, I've never regretted paying the extra for the 4090 as I've never had to worry about running out of VRAM, and the card hardly gets stressed. The most taxing VR games seem to be CPU limited.

do you need 4K textures on a quest 3 ? is it possible?

I actually play very few VR games, only Automobilista 2, which doesn't support DLSS etc, so I'll see what the pure raster performance difference between the 5080 and 90 is first.

I wouldn't waste my money upgrading from a 3090. You will be paying what? £1000+ for 30/40% improvement over what you have. I would only pay that much if I was doubling performance.

That extra performance is enough to stop some demanding games going into reprojection, which is worth it.

I find I'm mostly CPU limited now, as the 4090 can handle most of what's thrown at it.

Just lower the settings. The visual difference between settings that cause reprojection and settings that don't on the 3090 are going to be tiny.

If he is happy with his Sim Racing now, will spending a £1000+ on a 5080 make it that much better for him?
Dunno, depends on his current balance of crispy visuals and FPS. I don't know what settings he's running or what he considers good.
Tbh, he should be fine enough with a 3090 in AMS2 if that's all he really plays.

If you haven't already, max out your res in the Meta app and run higher AA.
See how good it looks and how good/bad your FPS is.

Somewhere in there, you'll find the answer for whether you want or need to upgrade.
