Hi all,

Last night i tried unistall my nvidia drivers for a GTX 580, as i was going to test a GTX 295 for a friend, to see if that card was working ok.

As i tried to unistall the drivers from nvidia, the PC froze, so i had to do a reboot of the PC, this is where the problem now starts, as i reboot, the PC says that it is loading the OS system, the screen then goes blank and black.

Nothing boots up.

I have been into BIOS and defaulted all settings, as my system was O/C to 4.0Ghz.

I have also tried to start the system with the CD, the system then goes to load windows 7, but again sits on the loading screen for windows, it then loads up (i think) but there is a black screen, with just a mouse cursor.

Im totally confused and any help would be really appreciated.

Or is it time to do a complete reinstall of Win 7, which i dont really want to do, as there are items on the PC i want to keep.

Any help would greatly appreciated, i will do my best to answer any questions that are asked.

Regards

Are you trying to boot with or without the card?
If it's a board with onboard graphics, try booting with them instead.
Try booting with the GTX 295 aswell, and also try other PCI-e slots.

Edit: Might also wanna try using the repair system from the Windows Disc.

I have tried to boot with the GTX 295, and i tried without the GTX 295 and my screen just went dark completely. No response at all.

Just said loading OS system then the screen goes all dark, computer stays on, but nothing on the screen.

Yes try above first.

It's a waste of time trying to re-attempt loading windows because if there is a hardware fault, then you'll get the same problem.

If you have more than one disk, disconnect non-bootable disks..

I might be worth downloading and creating a live CD such as PEBuilder, then try booting from that. If that boots then it maybe your HDDs (or SSD) has developed a fault. You can either run the CHKDSK option from PEBuilder to scan and fix problems or just download the diagnostics utility from the HDD manufacturer.

Right i have tried to boot into safe mode with F8 but it does not respond, i havent tried F5 which i have read may also activate safe mode.

Thanks for the above guys, i will try when i get home from work. Fingers crossed i will be able to get into the PC by using F5.

All other suggestions are very welcome.

Would you say its goes black at roughly the same time windows would normally start to use the graphics drivers or is it during POST?

As above i would see if you can get into safe mode and go from there

Yep, sounds to me like safe mode then driver sweeper would be a good idea.

You can also try roll-back the graphics driver through device manager (obviously you can only do this once in safe mode...).

In answer to your question yes, as windows should load then it goes black, i am unable to get into safe mode, tried F8 and F5 to no avail.

Could the HD have failed?? the PC enters BIOS ok but just wont attempt to boot to windows at all

if youre struggling to get to safe mode, start booting windows, as it starts loading pull the plug, from there reboot it and as you're os selection it should say "windows was not shut down properly" and will give you a option to get on to safe mode.

Hope this helps, Zac

It's worth checking if you dislodged any cables while you were swapping the cards around. Unplug and replug them all as it's difficult to tell if one has popped out a little bit.

Hi guys,

Thanks all for your contributions and ideas, some i have now taken on board.

I couldnt get my HD to boot in any mode possible. So in the end i put a WD Raptor in and installed Win7 Ultimate on that.
System is now up and running again with no issues, i will now attempt to try and hook up the other HD, in an attempt to get all the information off of that.

Again thanks

If it goes to a black screen with just a moveable mouse cursor, I've found before that its detected my main display as a second the odd time and leaving me with no main display. Dunno why it does it but maybe this was possible in your case?

In future I wouldn't bother uninstalling Nvidia graphics drivers when switching cards; they all use a common enough framework in the modern cards that you'll end up reinstalling the same thing again anyway.

It used to be necessary to uninstall in the past because their driver update process was cranky but that's been fixed for a few years now.
