Is it worth buying this RAM at all please?

Would it actually run at 1000mhz+ at stock?

Just need a little info on it, as i might be upgrading soon.

Or should I hold back, DDR3/4 is comming out soon?

8500+ is rated above 1000MHz
8000 is rated @ 1000MHz

Either way its going to cost you a lot of $$$ for ram rated at 1000MHz
Not sure when DDR3 will hit but I would suggest getting 6400c4 ram and clocking it.

My GeIL 2GB PC6400C4 800MHz cost me under 200 pounds and overclocks to 940MHz 5-5-5-15.

Are you going to OC??

it won't run PC8500 right out of the box, it's for ocers who are looking for the best RAM that will match the OCed FSB speed (500Mhz+).

Otherwise it is utterly pointless.

Thanks, thats what I wanted to know ;P

So does all the DDR2 RAM run at the same speed out of the box? and the FSB in the descriptions is just what it can be clocked up to ?

Depends on what CPU you have. RAM will always match the FSB speed at stock, so if you have C2D which have 266FSB and that's what the RAM will run at, 266Mhz, DDR2 533 PC4200.

Unless of course if you run divider to make RAM run faster than the FSB.

If you use a divider to the RAM, say CPU is at 266 FSB and the RAM is at 400FSB. Is there any disadvantage to doing this? would you loose any preformance to the CPU or other components?

No there is no disadvantage in doing this. More memory bandwidth is always better, espcially with Intel, but the amount of actual performance increase in debatable, for me the difference is only obvious in benchmarks but in real life applications running RAM faster than FSB has little benefits. That's just my experiences though with my old P4 and DDR so not sure if this is the case with DDR2. But it certainly doesn't mean it is worth spending stupid amount on PC8500 RAM just so you can run your RAM way faster than FSB.

Surely with the FSB of the c2d chips running at 266, you'd have to have some SERIOUSLY slow RAM to run slower than the FSB?!!!

To be perfectly honest dude, get yourself one of the following 3:

1. Cellshock PC6400 Cas 4-4-4-12
2. Team PC6400 Xtreem 4-4-4-10
3. Crucial PC5300 10th Anniversary 3-3-3-12 :)

All of these will hit stupidly high clocks and you won't feel like you have had your leg bitten off either :p

sorry to hijack but would you recommend the Team Xreem 3-3-3-8 or would you go for something a little faster. To be used on a 680i board
