PCIe-4 in PCIe-5 slots

I have a 2 TB PCIe-5 drive in the main M2 drive slot - which is PCIe-50
I also have a secondary M.2 drive which is PCIe-4.0 as my motherboard has 2 x PCIe-5.0 slots and 2 x PCI3-4.0 slots
Will a PCIe-4 drive work any faster on a PCIe-5 slot (as its direct connect to CPU) than if its in a PCIe4.0 slot which goes via a controller module.

Generally some minor differences on a direct CPU link vs via controller hub - more so if using lots of devices and doing device to device copies, etc., some of the faster PCI-e gen 4 NVMEs seem to see a tiny difference on a CPU linked gen 5 slot vs gen 4 slot but like 50MB/s against 7000MB/s kind of thing (they won't take any advantage of PCI-e 5).

Possibly, depending on the board topology. Gen 5 should* provide much better signalling performance than Gen 4.

Try it, share your findings and further computer science for the boys.

The background is M.2 slot 2 (PCIe-5) not working, tested same M.2 module in slots 3&4 (PCIe-4) and it works fine.
Replacement motherboard on its way.
