pcu/gpu/mobo upgrade

I think your gonna need 2gb vram at 1080p, i would stick with 7850 personally. If you only play source games then that 650 might be ok.

I take it you only use it for general browsing and light gaming?

I know this is overbudget but you get a significant upgrade in technology for a good price, its good value.

YOUR BASKET
1 x MSI HD 7850 Twin Frozr III OC 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Cards w/ Nexuiz & Sleeping Dogs PC Games *£155.99
1 x MSI Z77A-G43 Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard *£71.99
1 x Intel Pentium G640 2.80GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail *£53.99
1 x GeIL Black Dragon 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (GD38GB1600C11DC) *£23.99
Total : £317.35 (includes shipping : £9.50).

if you need a upgrade later down the line, a 2nd hand current gen cpu would be decent in a few years, overall, that system would be a sound upgrade.

those are good prices.

did you read mei's post earlier on today concerning my hdd?

it's a :

maxtor stm3250820as ata

i couldn't tell for sure by looking around if it was ide or not.
some google hits listed ide alongside my specs.
can you tell by those specs if it is ide?
would my hdd be compatible with the upgrade you listed?
i'm getting hungry to spend some money :)

The Maxtor hdd is sataII, so you can reuse it.

this is all stuff i can look at inside the case when i get my day off on thursday.
i'b better head to bed, i'm knackered:(

i'm back!

sorry about the long delay. also, i had surgery on friday ;)

anyway:

i have found out that my psu is 750w. plenty for everything for now.

the msi gpu is overkill for me atm, so i'll pick up a gainward 560 gtx for £90.

i was thinking i would stick with my current mobo, as i could pick up a 775 socket compatible intel quad 8200 (2.33) for around £50 new.

alternately, there are second-hand intel core 2 duos @ (3.00ghz) for around £30-£50.
it seems a lot of games fall between 2.00 and 2.5ghz these days.

a question: is there any need to pick a quad core. are there any games that run/need 4 cores to run, or do the majority still use 2?

i just bought the q6600 and the gainward 650 gtx.

psu: i didn't manage to catch the make of it.

that oc'ing to 3ghz thread link looked too complicated to me. i might need a bit of help with that ;)

ok, i have a problem:

i did not get any visual display when i installed the gtx 560.
i thought it was faulty, so i reinstalled my old 9600 gt.

a friend who was helping me troubleshoot discovered what might be the solution.
the gtx 560 is compatible with pci express x 16, but my current mobo only supports x 4 on the single pci express slot it has (i think!).
from reading around, i get the impression that that means it will be running at a 1/4 of its intended speed.
but i do not see anything ('no signal' on my lcd).

below are the specs for my current mobo:

american megatrends inc.
4 coredual-vsta

if you need more info about the mobo, i will have to re-download cpu-z again, but i can do it.

i was attempting to show you an image using the 'insert image icon:

but it isn't working, so i don't know what to do.
to hell with it. it would've been quicker to physically type out the information from cpu-z:

model:
4coredual-VSTA

brand:
american megatrends inc.

version:
p2.30

pci-express:

link width:
x4

max. supported:
x16

the above info was all i could get from cpu-z
i typed it into google and i get:

ASRock > 4CoreDual-VSTA?
