pcu/gpu/mobo upgrade

does the above help?

it's all i have to go on atm.
so if i am trying to run a 16x gpu on a 4x pci express mobo slot, would this explain not having any signal at all to my lcd (e.g:-not seeing the desktop).

Just found it before you posted.

Have you plugged in the 2x6pin PCIE connector from your Psu, as the 560ti(if this is your card) requires external power. The 9600gt uses power from the mobo i believe.

damn! sorry, it is a gtx 650 (not 560!), and it's not ti.
when i installed the 650, i unplugged the PCIE connector that was previously plugged into the 9600 into the 650.

Is the Gpu a GTX560 or GTX650, as it seems to change from one post to the next.
GTX560 requires 2x6pin PCIE connectors
GTX650 requires 1x6pin PCIE connector.

i got the numbers mixed up. i was tired and i made a mistake ;)

it is a gainward geforce gtx 650, and the 1x 6pin pci connector that was previously connected to the 9600 was then inserted into the 650 when it was installed.

As far as I can see those are PSU's not to be desired!

Regardless of the desirability of the Psu, i don`t think it is the problem. If it can run the 9600gt it should run the GTX650.
Is the card new or secondhand? Also can you try it in another system, your friends, if he has a PC.

it was listed as new.
i hope my friend lets me try it on his, but he was wary about having to cleanly uninstall/install drivers etc.

then again, i told him he could have the old 9600 free, so that should help the cause!

Would help, at least we will know if the card actually works or not.

ok, i tried the card on a friends pc and it still didn't work.
he didn't perform a full boot to the desktop, but just enough to see if the bios recognized that a new card had been installed, but nothing registered.

i should mention is that my friends pc didn't have a 6 pin connector to insert into my 650.
i am not sure that the gtx 650 requires this connector or not.

one other point:
these gpu issues lead me to believe there is another factor that could be affecting the performance of my current gpu, the 9600 gt, and that is that the 9600 gt is a 16x gpu that has been running in a pcie mobo slot that could only provide up to 4x. common sense would tell me that i am obviously only getting a quarter of the performance out of it.

again, i am quite new to all of this!

If he didn't have the 6 pin powering the 650 then that would be causing it not to work. I take it you have done a latest BIOS update?

you're right.
i did read on a forum that you didn't need an external 6 pin, then when you said i did, i looked further. i then found other threads contradicting the first one!

ok, is it possible to unplug my 6 pin connector from my pc and plug it into my friends pc?

that way we will know that it is being sufficiently powered on his x16 slot. if it still doesn't work, then the card is most probably faulty.

as for the bios update, i didn't know what that was. i do know, so i'm looking into it.
haven't got a clue.. i can't find any latest bios updates for this old mobo, its too old..

i have had a good 2 weeks selling some old cds/vinyl, so with the money i can afford to look at better stuff.

1) i've got my eyes on an i3 2130 for £75

2) i'll try to pick up either a 460 or a 560 gpu.
(i think my 650 is faulty, but the seller said if it's faulty or working they will keep hold of it and give me a full refund. that will be £90 towards either the 460 or 560).

3) then a mobo. i assume i should pick one that is 2.0 compatible to go with the gpu & cpu?

4) then there's ram. 4gb should be ok, as i only run vista 32?

what do you think?

i bought a 460 gtx
i'm probably going to buy the i3 2100 2moro

i just need some advice on a decent compatible mobo to go with these two and i'm done.

c'mon guys, gizza hand. i'm nearly there. by the end of this week i'll be happy as larry ;)

cheers idleman,

i'll but them this evening when i get in from work.

so what is the distinction between 2.0 and 3.0 atm?
i will be running a rig with the cpu and mobo at 3.0 while the gpu is 2.0.
i have read around and been informed that this will not have any noticeable affect.
i realize it is future proofing, so if one day i was to upgrade to a gpu that is 3.0, would there be a significant increase in performance?

do i have to reinstall my copy of vista 32. if i do, i read around something about maybe having to reactive it through ms?

i'm guessing that i don't buy all this new stuff then install it, boot up and everything runs as normal!

ah, it's all new to me :)
