Hi Guys and Gals,

I know there are quite a few posts about the 805 chip but I would like some buying advice if possible from you people in the know :)

I need:

Chip (805 obviously)
Motherboard
Memory
PSU
I have a cheap Watercooler already which should allow me to clock it some even though I may not get the max out of it.

On the motherboard front is it worth going for the new ASUS one which supports Conroe ? or do any of you know of any Mb manufacturers that will/can update their existing boards BIOS to handle Conroe ?

I currently have a Corsair CM512-3200C2 ram, would this work with the 805 and LGA775 mainboard until I got some new memory ?

Thanks for any advice.

You will need DDR2 and I would suggest a conroe compatible board as it will make upgrading later on much easier.

I was doing it as cheaply as possible and bought a Bgrade Asus P5ND2 SLi Deluxe and have managed to get 3.8ghz out of it on air cooling by doing a pencil mod on the board.

IMO

Motherboard - DFI 975 board
RAM - 2X1GB G.Skill PC5300
PSU - They use a lot of power, so a good one will be needed (500w Seasonic or Enermax liberty)

The DFI boards seem good but I have heard that ASUS boards are best for overclocking Pentiums ?

DFI are considered the best board for overclocking, asus are on par for pentiums but much like mine they have quite bad vdroop which will limit your OC unless you are willing to mod it.

AVOID Asus boards with the Stack Cool technology - I know I have a temp problem on my board with the PenD. My HSF uses a rear bracket to hold it the board and I believe this is causing a Heat build around the socket - not good.

The P5LD2 for cheapness seems good... cant remember if it uses the Stackcool tho :/

Hmm £50 less can't complain but I wonder how much difference between G.Skill and Patriot when OCing ?

Don't buy an 805 then spend a shedload of cash to overclock it!

An 805 is 2.66GHz and £85+delivery
A 940 is £140+delivery. The 940 will do 3.2GHz out of the box, almost definitely clock to 3.8GHz on air, it will run cooler and it will run significantly faster in processor limited applications as it has 2Mb cache per core.

805's only make sense if you want to clock it up on the cheap. It's a 133MHz FSB, so forget the super-expensive Patriot and GSkill RAM, get yourself some value RAM, a B-grade motherboard, an AC Freezer 7 Pro and a BIG, stable power supply and go clocking. But do it the cheap way, or just buy a fast processor and have done with it.

I specced that system with upgrading to conroe in mind

@Raikiri - I understand - but then why not just wait for Conroe?

I see this over and over again - people being advised to buy £100+ motherboards and £100's worth of 'special' RAM to overclock an £85 processor that won't necessarily clock over 3GHz

@Raikiri #2 - You have a good 805 clocking solution yes? It's based on a B-grade motherboard, some cheapish RAM and it's proper performance on a low budget. I happen to think that's what these chips are all about.

For some reason people are spending megamoney to buy a conroe compatible board and RAM to 'practice' overclocking on an 805. The Conroe's will probably be good clockers, but we don't know - Drazic has one I believe and I haven't seen any benchies off his system yet. There was another user who had ES chips, but they're not the same as production.

The sad fact is that you can get an ASRock 775 TWINS R2.0 for £33+VAT from a competitor and it will clock your 805 as far as it will go ON STOCK VOLTS. Because it has no voltage adjustment, people are writing it off. But for £175 you can have 1Gb Generic DDR2 PC5300 RAM, the above mentioned ASRock motherboard and an 805 and it'll clock upto about 3.3GHz - 3.5GHz. It'll probably give a 20-25% overclock on your first Conroe too and then you can think about buying a decent clocking motherboard.

That's my 2p worth and I'll go and lie down now

Personally I would rather have a decent motherboard to use with conroe, especially due to the extra power requirements I just wouldnt trust a £30 board to OC with. I am saying get the decent stuff so the OP can sell the 805 later and buy a conroe, also the Patriot is the cheapest 2x512mb kit on this site, the same goes for the G.Skill being the cheapest 2x1gb kit available so it is hardly "£100s on special RAM".

Yes but I don't plan on upgrading to conroe any time soon, when I do I will be buying the G.Skill and probably the DFI (depends on what is out at the time)

I ahve yet to see one that won't do 3ghz... even yet to see one that wont do 3.6 with a decent motherboard.

I can see what you are saying WJA96 but I think you get what you pay for in life so a cheap MOBO could bring instability when OCing. Whereas buying one of the big three Asus, Abit or DFI gurantees a standard of quality.

Also I would like to upgrade to Conroe in say 6 months to a year when the prices are reasonable.

I can't understand why you called the DFI a B-Grade MOBO though, as it is simply the lower specced Lan Party. I would rather buy the Infinity anyway as I would not use RAID 10 which will probaly come with a Lan Party ver. or two extra SATA's (seen as I already have a SIL add in card) for the £50 - £100 more.

My question is will the DDR2 5300 from any of the big companies Corsair, G.Skill or whoever be adequate for the upcoming Conroe whenever I choose to upgrade ?
