People pulling out of junctions... RANT!

Ah yes, I'm back with one of my monthly rants! This time it's about people (as it's happened twice in less than 24 hours) pulling out of junctions with no consideration for oncoming traffic.

On the way to a mates last night, I was hooning along. Having not driven the car over 3000rpm all week due to trying to save fuel (that didn't last long, pft), I booted it from some lights, was doing about 50mph when some idiot in a HGV about 100yds down the road decided he wanted to pull out in front of me.

I mean WTF! It's not as though he couldn't see me coming!! I braked pretty hard and when the road split into two lanes, dropped it to 2nd, nailed it past him while giving him the finger out of my window. Idiot.

Same thing happened again on the way to work this morning. Coming down a road, doing about 30mph I could see another HGV sat at a junction about 50yds in front.

What's this... he's pulling out... again, it's not as though he didn't see me as the road leading upto the junction is straight. Now this REALLY peeved me off so I leant on the horn for a good 15 seconds!

What the hell is going on with people at this time of the year? The number of idiots I've seen recently is starting to annoy me, and I can usually let things go pretty quickly by backing off and turning the stereo up.

At least they gave you time to react (not that flipping the bird is what i'd call the correct reaction in that situation ;)).

I had a guy decide that joining the roundabout gets right of way (i'm doing 30~ round it), and when i'm literally at his entrance to the roundabout, this idiot (who hadn't braked at all) came flying out at me. My reaction? To boot it out of the way. He must have missed my rear end by sheer millimeters to be honest. Muppet

I'm in the same situation, every morning on the way to work I get people pulling out like muppets, not evan looking at whos heading their way!

It's deffinatly getting worse!

Because he is driving an HGV, whats the worst that could happen , you drive in to the back of him , he probably would not even notice , perhaps dislodge a bit of mud from the light cluster.

Probably it would go 50/50 on the insurance , if he even noticed to stop.

[edit] re-read that back and I suppose that me just ranting. Sorry agw at least its Friday and you can have a good drive at the weekend.

It's even more annoying when someone pulls out in front you when it's perfectly clear behind you and then slowly turns into the next junction just up the road

No worries. I was actually going to agree with your post. The reason they do this is becuase they CAN. No car driver in their right mind is going to go up and tailgate a HGV after it's just pulled out in front of you.

You just have to hang back and take it. It just gets to me when people think they can push you about on the road just because they're in a bigger car/van/truck.

SDK^, heh, that happened to me this morning coming up another road. I don't know what it is... maybe my car has a moron magnet.

so you're saying the right way to handle this situation is to "teach him a lesson" and tailgate him, just to learn him the error of his ways?
unfortunately due to the size of his vehicle you're not able to and this is a bad thing?

does the term road captain ring any bells?

When driving or riding especially, its best to asume everybody is going to pull out :(
best advice you can have.
treat ALL motorists as stupid, uneducated, unpredictable fools.
about 95 times out of 100 you'll be right to some degree.

don't trust indicators or the lack of brake lights either, it seems some drivers don't know how to use them.
at junctions watch the drivers eyes as they tend to give away where he's really trying to go.

No.

What I'm saying is, only an idiot would proceed to tailgate a HGV waving and swearing. Both because he could slam on causing you to plough into the back of him, and also because it's not going to make you feel any better.

And before you say it, no I don't go around tailgaiting people who pull out on me, whatever they're driving. Sure, I like a good blast of the horn every now and then and I might wave my fingers about to show my anger, but after I've done that I'll forget about it and carry on with my journey.

In repsonse to the above post, I do drive quite defensively and am always expecting people to pull out in front of me... but not when the person pulling out is a 20 tonne HGV with the turning circle of a bus

item one.
i'm NOT aiming this at you.

i think some form of anger management is needed for drivers.
too many times you see drivers flipping out over what's really a non-issue.
i'm guilty of this myself.

when you say "you just have to hang back and take it", this suggests that if it were a regular car you WOULDN'T "hang back and take it" and that you'd act differently.

Ahhh, gotya.

Well, funnily enough, if someone did it to me in a regular car, I'd be less annoyed about it. I certaintly wouldn't go blasting the horn and sticking my fingers out the window.

Never understood the whole sticking fingers up at people or tail gating or any kind of revenge on the road. To me it always seems to equal a 4yr old stamping his feet and refusing to move in terms of the maturity you show when you do it.

I haven't been driving long, only about 5yrs, and the most important lesson i have learnt and you are clearly in the process of learning is think of the most stupid, annoying and dangerous manoeuvre the car in front can make and plan for it because 9 times out of 10 they will. I am not afraid of killing myself on road but i am very afriad others will.

Agreed. Earlier, I pulled out on a mini roundabout as the vehicle about to join on the right couldn't actually move, it was a bit tight, but still safe. However, the other joining vehicle decided to floor his accelerator get as close to me as possible and then slam on his brakes, deliberately creating the situation to suggest that I was in the way. If he drove 'normally' and accelerated 'normally' then there wouldn't of been a problem. But he decided to try and 'teach me a lesson' by beeping the horn and looking astonished that I had to cheek to be on the road. Serious anger management issues with some people. I just laugh it off. Some things are more important than getting wound up by other drivers. Seriously.

my temper is getting worse.
last night when leaving work i came to a 4 exit mini roundabout wanting to turn right.it's a busy road so you really need to go for the gaps in traffic otherwise you'll sit their forever.
a car approaches slowly from my right showing no signals so with my right indicator on i pull away briskly only to have HER turn right (still not signaling) and undercutting the mini roundabout to such a degree that her car didn't even touch the thing.
THEN she has the audacity to hit the horn at me!
so i stop in the middle of the road as i'm blowing a few mental fuses and shout at her pointing out that not only was she supposed to signal, but that someone came up with the name "Roundabout" because YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO GO ROUND THE DAMN THINGS!!!

i was so angry i couldn't even wait to wind the window down to shout at her i opened the door because it's quicker  @ me.

^a good reason why, after a bad day at work, you should chill out a little before driving home.

HGVs who do that I have a certain degree of sympathy for; you just need an absurdly large gap to get an HGV out of a junction so if there's any kind of traffic you're pretty much stuck cutting someone up.

What was the speed limit of this road?

Don't see why that matters, but it was a 30.

But don't worry, there were no houses/schools nearby. Just an industrial estate. It was around 8:30pm and the road was clear. No other traffic apart from me and this HGV.
