People who go and sit in their car to eat their luncheon at work

Every place I have ever worked I have noticed a small subculture of people who do this (almost exclusively men). I've always wondered why but have never found the right opportunity to bring it up with them. I am sure there will be someone in GD who does it so maybe you can let me know the thought process.

Thanks.

And what do you do on your lunch break?

Each person is free to do whatever they want to do. I make models on my lunch breaks or sleeping in the car.

its the kiss of death to any hope of promotion, you need to be a people person not a sad loner.

men do this in supermarket car parks, sitting alone while the little woman gets the shopping

" my bit of the contract is done , I drove her here "

If people are going to man handle themselves over lunch I'd actively encourage them to do it in their cars rather than the office. I work from home most of the time so it would just be wierd to do it in the car.

In all seriousness they are probably functional alcoholics (or drug addicts) and are going to their car to take the edge off with a bit of something. Especially if they go sit in the car on breaks too.
In all seriousness they are probably not.

I'd be looking for a new job if my current career progression relied on making small talk at lunch whilst colleagues microwave their stinking leftovers. I would much rather go and eat my lunch in the car and/or go for a wander outside when its nice

Good call. I had a female colleague who did this and we never knew why. Sometimes she would fall asleep in the car, causing her lunch break to overrun. She eventually went on long term sick then was dismissed completely and turns out that she was an alcoholic. We still see her out and about with the local drunks in the park. Sad really as she was a really nice lady, very likeable, then she mixed with the wrong people and threw it all away.

I cannot think of anything more death penalty worthy than eating in my car.

Can't blame them.

I don't sit in the car, but try to find a table outside on my own somewhere. I don't like people much, and it's nice to have a bit of piece and quiet. In the break room at work there's usually people on their phones, or listening to music, or want to talk.

I highly doubt it is the case most of the time - but I've had reason to suspect people are doing it before.

We had to throw a microwave away in work after someone's mackerel exploded in there. No amount of cleaning could get rid of the fish smell.

It could be worse, at a previous place of work someone wrapped a turd in cling film and then microwaved it. There are some smells that you never forget, you could actually taste it.

So far we've got that they are:
- getting boozed up
- getting high
- having a tug
And then a quick nap after.

Sounds like one hell of a lunch break, I just have a sandwich and a twix

I've done this before. Listen to the radio and avoid sloshing eating noises. All good.

You can't think of why a colleague might not want to talk to you whilst on lunch? maybe you aren't as interesting as you think you are? or maybe they just want a quiet sandwich. really isn't difficult to understand at all:p

Because they don't want to spend any more time with their co workers than they have to.

and this.
