So....

Its the year 2010, does anyones workplace here STILL run Novell Netware as the basis for their systems?

I am ashamed to say that I know several organisations that still run it, and its soo far behind the times its unreal.

If anyones organisation still runs with this rubbish, what are your opinions?!

Do you detest it with a passion?

I believe my Mrs current employer uses the above systems. Quite laughable really as she works for a University. My only memory of them was at school and it was rubbish back then, can't comment as of recent years.

Our work systems are Microsoft, Unix and a little Linux based. NO APPLE. :D

I used to work at Novell - afaik there are still updating netware on its own os and on a Suse core. Its so entrenched in many companies simply because it just keeps running faultlessly...

The scary thing is that one of them is a public sector body, who has recently spent circa £500K on virtualisation, only to continue to run Netware!!

I thought this was insane.

Novell can be an extremely stable and reliable system if it's set-up properly, so no I don't detest it.

I got banned from the college network for having a guide on 'How to hack Novell Networks' and tools in my user area.

I tried explaining it wasn't me but my friend who was a right litle hacking fiend (and put it on my user area), but it didn't wash and he left me out to dry. :(

The last time I saw Novell Netware was at an un-named but popular men's razor corporation 3 weeks ago. Couldn't believe a company as large as this one still goes down such avenues.

We use XP/Office2k3 and have an intranet portal powered by Wordpress. I work for an MoD related company too lawl.

Our company (quite large, publicly listed) still uses POP3 email, and our webmail only let's you see 8 emails per page with no search function. Grrrr

i still get regular calls from agents asking if i know novell

some of the roles pay very well, but it isnt a path i'm prepared to dead-end down

we are using Windows 7 with office 2010 in IT services with xp and 2003 for users but they are due to come over to 7/2010 in Q1 2011,

we are also looking at using Novell Zenworks which looks pretty cool,

Around 800 machines, give or take.

Upgrading them to Windows 7, around 220-250 done iirc. Rest are all Windows XP apart from 30-50 Win2000... :) (Vista got bypassed)

Servers? 45 of them, 5 in various flavours of linux, around 15 2008 R2, another 16 2008, the rest 2003 x32. Oh and 4 iSeries (as400's)

No idea what our IT is I turn it on, takes 20 mins to log in and fire up then is slow all day, but I am remote on a construction site, our IT guys and gals are very good (just incase), in other firms its been IT PITA and HR OK, here it's the other way round IT are great and HR are useless
