Peoples workplace IT systems...

The scary thing is that one of them is a public sector body, who has recently spent circa £500K on virtualisation, only to continue to run Netware!!

I thought this was insane.

I was on my VCP course sat next to a fellow who came from a company with these exact credentials! I couldn't believe it really.

Linux on 4/8core 3.2 machines here.. some sort of top line quadro card also if your doing fancy stuff! Oh and apple 30inch displays :) /showoff

Wow, I'm amazed at how much Netware is still out there!

I dont think there is any doubt that it's a dead end though.

In my own personal experience, Netware seemed to hang a lot for no reason.

In addition, one server with difficulites seemed to prevent the entire network from functioning properly.

Work's Network (IT Company)
3 Dell Servers running SBS2008 + 2x Server 2008
1 Built server running Server 2003
1 old IBM server running VMWare for testing

PCs are mainly 7.

Got companies ranging from SBS2000 to SBS2008 and everything in between. Win98 up to 7 on Client PCs. Pretty much covers every OS out there :p

The Novell Edirectory directory service is *still* more functional and feature rich than Microsoft Active Directory.

Netware is neither here nor there, and probably isn't why most of these large organisations stay with Novell. Edirectory will be the reason, or a product that uses Edirectory.

large organisations cant just move easily to new systems. in fact, once an organisation gets big enough, rollouts end up like the painting of the forth bridge. we're just tidying up the last win2k systems in our large multinational environment right now. The move to 2008/Windows 7 starts in 2 quarters....

Work for a school, every single desktop running windows 7, all the servers are 2008R2 except the terminal servers which are 2008 and the ISA server which is still 2003R2. Apart from the ISA server there isn't a single server there i haven't setup myself :)

Some teachers probably have the odd windows 2000 laptop they barely use, most laptops are windows XP and slowly being switched to windows 7 as and when they appear

Never used novell netware

We still have 1 server running windows 2000 and a few desktops running windows 98! They are hardly ever used and mainly for scanning so work fine. The 2k server is being scrapped soon

We used to have to support it for our customers. I even had to write some networking code specifically to work with it. No longer, on both counts. Thank goodness.

We still do get occasional enquiries about it though, and even may have recently got a call from them wanting to sell software to us. :)

PS - There's a few AS/400 machines lurking around our office too. As far as I know, we have no OS/400, or i5, or i, or whatever they want to call it this week.
