Perfect Gin and Tonic?

I've always known about them but never bothered to have a glass of it. Now that I have: there is no looking back. :D

G&T season is upon us, hot summer evenings with a cool glass of G&T...nothing beats it.

My method:

- Tall glass full of ice
- Pour gin over ice
- Squeeze of lime (not lemon) with a wedge in the glass
- Gin: Bombay Sapphire
- Tonic: Fever Tree (always from a glass bottle)

The flavour of the lemon/lime will come out best if the gin is warm.

Put your slice/wedge into a glass, then pour the gin over.
Leave for 3-5 minutes for the flavour to infuse.
Tip a lot of ice into the gin. Counter-intuitively more ice = less watery drink.
Leave until condensation forms on the outside of the glass.
Take your bottle of fever tree straight from the fridge and pour it over.

That sounds nice and a very good description of what they did appeals to me too.

Quite cheap at £24.50 a bottle.

Not a regular G&Ter but have recently rushed through a bottle of Bruichladdich's Botanist gin which has some really smooth and flowery flavours. I tried the G without the T and it was still bloomin nice. Am holding off getting another bottle for that reason!

Bruichladdich is my favourite malt distillery. Would be interested to see what the gin is like.

Doesnt it only come in a glass bottle?

Hendricks Gin + Fever Tree Tonic = :)

Its a very different kind of G&T to the Plymouth (Navy strength if I push the boat out) and supermarket tonic I usually drink. Only got 4 little bottles of Fever Tree though as I don't think its worth the price normally, but got a bottle of Hendricks for my birthday so thought I would treat myself.

The only problem with Hendricks is that the slightly 'easier' taste than Plymouth means I find myself putting more in :p

So now its Hendricks > Plymouth > Tanqueray > Bombay > Gordons

Anything else I should try?

Sorry for the thread revival, but this is the only real G&T thread.

I once read somewhere that using lemon in a G&T kills the quinine, whereas lime enhances it. Not sure how this measured up in reality though, I've never tried them side by side and don't have them often enough to keep a proper memory of the exact difference.

Never ever buy tonic with sweeteners in (Schweppes for example). They leave a horrible aftertaste. Even Waitrose tonic is better as it has no artificial sweeteners.

Plymouth is my fave gin. Plus using good tonic is not too pricy compared to pub prices so just do it.

G&T - lovely drink.
