So I NEED an up grade but on a budget.

ive been out of teh game for teh last 5 years at least so am VERY out of touch!

Current laptop is a Dell Studio 1737 with 3 gig ram and standard old HDD.

Im thinking for a quick fix to upgrade the ram and the drive for an SSD.

The laptop will only be used for processing images.

Would i see an increase in performance or am i just waiting my money and time?

Thanks
A

the best thing for performance out of the two would be a SSD but the speeds on it would also depend on if you have a sata 3 or sata 2 connection.

a SSD will make the laptop itself faster to do things even if used on a sata 2 connection (that's what I have my SSD connected too.

how old is the laptop?

Quick google throws this up : The SATA controller is 150 MBps.

150 MB/s means it's SATA 1.0. It's nothing to worry about unless you're processing really huge files (many GB) and even then the difference will be in single-digit seconds. But ED209 is right, technically any SSD you buy will be limited by the motherboard.

If you're planning to get into gaming today, my suggestion would be to save your money up and then just splash out for a full on gaming rig/laptop.

Thanks guys for both your comments.

I wont be gaming - kids get in the way of that these days.

It will be processing photos, even the raw files will only be 50ish meg tops i reckon.

Cheers

you can pick up SSD's quite cheap these days (smaller sizes 120GB and 256GB) and they go up in price a bit for 512GB upwards but this depends on what size HDD you need

Yup, just looking for a 120 gig now, shouldnt need more than that as all images will get backed up to the cloud and an external.

Cheers
