Performance/modified car insurers?

It's very nearly that time of the year again. In my experience of getting quotes over the last 4 or 5 years I have got a bit of a "shortlist" down, as all the usual run of the mill insurers are no good for me.

I just wanted to do a quick check if there's any I should be trying really? Of course I'll run the usual go-compare stuff out of interest but unlikely to be of use.

I tend to phone these guys (have had policies with Chris Knott and am currently with Brentacre):

Adrian Flux
HIC (owned by Flux, usually same price)
Sky Insurance
Brentacre
Chris Knott

Usually the most competitive (by around £100!) is Chris Knott and Brentacre. I was 28 when taking the policy out, live in the Bronx and pay 479 fully comp at the moment (Golf 1.8 20vt) with 4 years protected NCB, all mods declared, power limit of 220BHP so I can tune up to that at no cost, just inform the insurer with any changes I make.

Any more for any more? :) I've probably tried loads of "specialists" such as performance direct etc who quoted STUPID prices to be honest.. but maybe worth looking at some if people can recommend from personal experience with them.

Cheers :)

This is one of the jobs i have to do tommorow as my insurance is due soon. I was planning on calling all of the above apart from Brentacre who I haven't heard of so thank you for mentioning them. :) Others I will be trying are A-Plan and Greenlight

Don't know what they are like for Golfs, but the modified scoob crowd usually go with one of three: A-Plan, Greenlight or Keith Michaels.

Well this is going well

Sky Insurance - Refused due to post code area
Chris Knott - wont insure due to the car having more than 20 extra HP
Adrian Flux - Cannot beat my renewal quote from Adrimal
Swinton - wont insure due to the car having more than 60 extra HP

Brentacre do different power level allowances. Great for cars like my dc2 that only needs everything other than engine doing but not so good for you HP chasers.

Cheers guys, have added a few names to the list :) Found last years quotes, Flux were 250 quid more than Brentacre and Chris Knott (who I was with before this years policy with Brentacre).

I think I tried some of the others last year without success (in terms of price) but I don't mind trying again, anything which can potentially save monies is good at the mo :)

All the run of the mill insurers tend to be a waste of time when I say I want to declare mods so I don't think I'll mess about getting individual quotes unless something comes up amazingly cheap on comparethemeerkat and sites like that lol :)

Thought I'd give a run down on what I've found so far.

About me: 29, living in Stoke-on-Trent in a crap postcode, parked on street, fully comp required SD&P, 250 quid compulsary excess, all the add-on's bar legal cover, 5 yrs NCB protected.

Car is a 1.8 20vt MK4 Golf 1999, Remapped, Forge TIP, Forge 007p, Pipercross panel filter, Stealth hidden backbox (purely so it's not silent lol), Lowered 45-50mm on full shocks/springs kit, Audi TT 17" alloys, Tinted windows, 4motion front splitter, estimated power of 200BHP.

Online compare sites, USELESS. Comparethemarket, beatthatquote, moneysupermarket, gocompare, confused, ALL gave Kwik Fit @ 708 quid with no mods and 350 excess, the rest were up and up in price.

So then I tried a couple of specialists who do online quotes... Greenlight - they refused to quote my postcode sector! Performance Direct came up at 672 mods declared. Getting there. I tried Bell as they're the cheapest from the Admiral group and got 1009 quid. Someone said try Priviledge and I got 1450 or so! Madness.

So then I sat down on the phone for an hour or so with the specialists.

A Plan - £550. Flux - £550. HIC the same. Keith Michaels - 900! Sky - £550. Noel Dazely, again £550! All seemed to be using Markerstudy, who I'm with currently via Brentacre.

This left me with Brentacres renewal price of £494. I then called Chris Knott (I save the best two till last in Chris Knott and Brentacre). The lady was like "Ooh it's not that cheap considering, more than I thought" and give me £450 all in. This time with Highway (who they used when I was insured with them previously.

So all thats left to do is try it on with Brentacre tomorrow morning and if no joy, cancel and back over to Chris Knott.

Next year maybe I won't bother wasting hours as the same two companies consistently come cheapest by £100! But, if you don't try you never know and I'd be gutted knowing I could have saved money as I'm pretty tight :D

Try A-Plan, Thatcham branch. Number 0845 0711234

Chris Knott have changed there policy to 30 or over now. Sky were 890 CK were 912 for my DC5, and A-Plan got it for 775, which is pretty good.

Try Keith michaels. 0800 542 2141
I pay £900 for a 400hp skyline with 6pts. 9yrs ncb though.

They also offer one day track insurance for £50 a day, if i remember right.

Edit:-sorry just seen above post.

Have you told them limited milage? could you register it at a different address? That would come down a lot if it was parked in a garage or on a drive.
I have the same problem every year, put a-plan or K.M have always been the cheapest(last 3-4 renewals). Have you joined an owners club? they often get discounts with certain company's.

I only do 4000-5000 miles a year, and saves me a few quid because they usualy quote for around 10,000
Not necessarily, a parents/girlfriends house? Your car is still insured where-ever it is parked, they just want a postal address. Although the insurers dont exactly shout about it.

Haha that's so wrong it's unreal. It's obviously done a lot but the people who do it understand that's it's not right and if the insurers found out they'd get in trouble and the address is "not just a postal address"!

Mileage is fair game imo though :p (although I do actually only do 5k)

Your probably right, i have no idea of the legality of it.
But for arguments sake:- you live with your parents. spend a couple of nights a week at your girlfriends, and work away from home 4 nights a week. Thats three addresses, which would you insure vehicle at? Id definitely consider the cheapest.
