I got followed into a petrol station about 6 months back by some stupidly expensive 7 series BMW. When I was filling up the guy got out walked over and asked if I was willing to sell it. He had a company with the tag initials GWL. Said he'd passed me about a year ago, when the reg was on my previous car, but didn't get a chance to follow me then.

Offered me 15k on the spot. I declined.

Man, thats insane - you'd better have that plate on a Ferrari or something becuase it'll be very amusing if its sitting there on a Mondeo LX

Nope, its on a 1.9 ltr Diesel Van (vauxhall astra).

Nah, I get to have my initials on every car I own for the rest of my life (being 26, hopefully thats a good few years yet! =) That to me is worth lot more than 15 grand.

When I first got it I got pulled over by the police, the officer said "don't worry, there is no problem, I just wanted to have a look at your plate" (the little tag line under near where I've got my name writen). People like taxi drivers have stopped me and asked about it. Its money well spent in my view.

Oh, plus its better than my boss' registration (18HJ - his initials are BHJ) - that hes got on his Ferrari 360 ;-)

My Auntie used to have SU 2000 on her S2000 (her name is Sue) but now the plate is on her SL500. My Uncle has 40 JEF (his name is Geoff) on his Merc. Funnily enough they don't appear on the RAC site so i'll try and get pictures (of the car, the plates are quite obvious in appearance

Just think had you not spend £15k on a plate you could have bought a nice car or a posh van!

My mates got HGB1 (Henry Graham Blandford) on his clapped out burgundy skoda fabia... always makes me laugh that the plates worth at least 10x more than the car

If I wanted one, I'd probably get one. Was toying with the idea of a TVR or a Z4 for a while a year or so ago. In the end running cost of a flash car just don't add up. I do a lot of miles, so something reliable, in frequent services and high MPG will win everyday I'm sorry to say.

Plus, I never said I spent 15k on it, just thats its current market value.

On a related note, anyone know a good way to get the number plate off a car if it's been stuck on with adhesive pads? My girlfriend had personalised reg plates and was keeping them when she sold her car a while back so had to change it's plates before selling. We ended up just sticking the new ones over the top!

How much did you spent on your plate when you bought it orginally?

I'll not disclose the exact amount, it wasn't anywhere near 15 grand put it that way. My mate not so long back spent more on a very very very top PC rig (2 ws lcds, sli 7800, amd x2 etc).

I worked everyday one summer in a bank when I was 17 plus every penny I had in savings, plus a few hundred from my old man.

Fair play to you for not selling, I wouldn't have sold it either for only £15k.

It's an appreciating asset anyway, an investment.

A friend of mine's Dad has got a few private plates, such as DEH 1, cost him £35k and he's already been offered over £60k for it a couple of years later.
