Personalised number plates and snobbery?

There's people I know who earn enough to buy nearly any car they want and drive Minis and what not (maybe it's fashionable) and there's guys I know who drive sheds but can afford way better (my dad for one), it doesn't always mean that if someone owns a certain type of car they have "predefined" social class/wage bracket etc.

A 20 year old girl in a brand new Cooper with a 3 digit plate is the definition of spoilt.

Fox is a student with a personalised plate, just in case you missed his sarcasm.

Fox is much older than the standard 18-21 year old student.

if you play it right, there is an unbelievable amount of money to be made in personalised number plates.

If I had **** loads of money, then I'd probably buy it. But i'd have to be earning wedge to contemplate buying it though.

Guy round here has 1 MC and 2 MC for himself, and 1 KC and i think 2 KC for his wife on different vehicles. Story is he outbid Michael Caine for the 1 MC plate at auction...over £50k, not sure if thats true or not...

The 245quid ones on Dvla are fine imo, shorter plates look smarter, but spending anything more than that is a waste imo :P

Even these are not that great tbh, I got one for my old e38, got sick of people thinking it was a "K reg" (K40....) so when I sold the car, the plate went with it (and its still on the car now!) I doubt very much I'd waste £250 or any more on another private plate.

Each to his own mind. :)

The trick is to pick the right one, if you pick one with a single digit then people won't mistake your car for a K reg. Or pick a car which quite blatantly isn't a K reg, what was that about the dated front of the E38 again :p

Had you had K4 ABC instead of K40 ABC I bet there wouldn't have been an issue.

I've got a personalised plate,

and its the ONE thing that I have in my life that can't;

get Lost
get Stolen
or Break

plus it finishes of the car and I will have it for the rest of my years... I don't see what the problem is!

It cant - the plate belongs to the car not you, so if for example your car is written off and your insurer pays out before you've got the plate off legally it becomes their property

Indeed, i have never had someone assume that my S-class is "J" reg. Get a plate completely out of scope of the age of your vehicle and with a single digit.

All insurance companies give you a chance to remove private plates though.

Steady on, I'm 24

what he's saying though, is that at 18 you didnt have a brand new car with mega expensive numberplate all provided by daddy's money though did you ?

that seems to be the type of person we're criticising here (understandably)

K4 ABC would cost considerably more than £250 hence me getting K40....

K reg pre dates the e38 anyway, that's e32 era. :p

Why are earlier letters so much dearer? E** or E* HAC is a lot dearer than M** or K** or something but it has to be G or earlier for my MX-5 :(
