Perspective distortion..

Could someone explain to my very untrained eyes what is wrong with the original picture?

As said, there's distortion which makes upright parts look like they're leaning. You can compare the original with some of the attempted corrections to get a better idea :)

Ah, its more obvious comparing to the adjusted photo. Wouldn't have noticed if it hadn't had been mentioned.
 
The main issue with the type of photo above is most shots are taken from ground level which will encourage the vertical distortion.
I think one way to minimise this is to raise the level at which the photo is taken.
So for London Bridge perhaps an elevating of some 25 meters perhaps !
