How economical is your car?
I have a Honda Accord 1.8 and when I measured the consumption last week, I only managed to get 250miles out of a 50 litre tank. That's not good is it?

Around town it's showing 20.3mpg and circa 300 miles from its 70 litre tank.

On a Motorway trip its about 38mpg and almost 600 miles.

23mpg average over the last 4000 or so miles. Light on the foot mixed use of between 100 and 200 miles per day, never >2500rpm

27mpg average in a mix of all conditions.
33mpg average if mostly motorway and trying to keep around the 70mph mark.
22/23mpg if predominately town or stop/start driving.

BMW 323i. MPG is a bit cack, but having done 500 mile round trips in an twin sparky Alfa Romeo (which noisy and uncomfortable), I wouldn't swap the BMW for the world. Well, not unless the world includes a Lexus waftmobile....

You're in dreamland. Either that or you keep to 50mph or drive like a granny!

31.7 mpg avg. over the last 13k in my Octavia 1.8T. Mixed driving, moderate right foot :p

Our Polo on the other hand manages 41.1 mpg despite most journeys being just 3 miles from cold :S Still it gives the same economy as my car when sat at 80 on a motorway stint :p

I'm bored of having this debate every time. Pull onto Motorway, set cruise to 70mph, and it'll return high 30's. Last trip to the girlfriends yeilded 39.7mpg between my fillup just outside of Exeter and the Worcester junction on the M5.

This picture is from my trip to Yorkshire - the mpg average was reset at the same time as the trip counter:

Provided you don't drive it at 90mph+ it's not particularly difficult to get 37-40mpg on Motorway journeys. After all, sitting at 70mph for miles on end is hardly stressing the engine. What kills it is plenty of acceleration/decelleration or a cold engine. Which is why in more normal use it's horribly inefficient around town - I don't tend to do more than 5 miles from cold - and which is why on my regular Southampton trips its about 31-32mpg because most of it is single carriageway A roads with plenty of overtakes.

i average 40-43 on 25 mile runs to the nearest town, on narrow, windy roads..
the best i've ever got here in norway is 50mpg on long drives on A roads averaging around 50mph

not particularly fantastic for a diesel, but i'm sure my driving style doesn't help

Anyone can get that over short durations of motorway. But its not a 'real world' motorway figure.

Thats over 308 miles as you can clearly see if you look at the image. I will confirm that both of my 330's agreed with that consumption too. I am actually considering downsizing to a 530i for the very reason that they are very economical cars.

How the heck is Exeter to North Yorkshire a short duration of Motorway? That even includes the M42 around Birmingham where I stopped for lunch and had a bit of slow moving traffic.
