Petrol - Driving off without paying

I did phone up tonight, but since it was late the guy said the office was closed, so could not find anything out. I think I will re phone them tomorrow and see if they have a record or not, and if so what price. If there is no record then..uhmm... well I'm pretty sure there will be

You could be very honest and do the right thing...or..

Phone them, tell them that you forgot to pay but don't remember what the cost was, give them the date and your reg number and ask them to tell you what you owe them, it's now down to them (to prove) how much you should pay. You may even find they just say not to worry about it as they don't have a record.

OR chill out, have a beer, and forget all about it ?

Could always take mine off my hands.....

I saw yours advertised and was tempted but was a bit lazy and the ball was already rolling on my new 1.

Out of interest will a pint and a pack of crisps be enough to take it off your hands

Cant afford anything more ;)

TBH don't worry. They can't prove that you tried to avoid paying since you went in to the shop and purchased other items. You can prove that you had every intention to pay because you went in to the shop to pay. This is not a typical fill up and fly incident.

Shes gotta go.... Need to get serious on a house deposit.

A few months back I filled up, went to pay for my fuel, gave them the pump number only to be told that it had already been paid for

The woman who went in before me had given the wrong number... easily done I suppose, I mean how do they expect you to remember a single digit number for a whole 20 seconds :p

At the cashires request I ended up paying for her fuel (£30) whilst she had forked out £46 for mine :p

This happened to dad a few months ago.

Went to a Tesco fuel station in Suffolk/Essex way. Filled up with fuel, grabbed a sandwich. Went to pay and left it at that. One week later on a Saturday night, just as we are about to go out, a Plod turns up asking why Dad did a runner at the petrol pumps. Luckily he had the receipt in his car and it turned out the woman at the counter didn't bill for the fuel and Dad didn't check the receipt to query it either.

Mr Plod certainly wasn't impressed with Tescos for wasting his time.

I used to work for Total and you get people trying to do it all the time. They dont have to say they have petrol, its down to the cashier to ask them if they have any.

If the cashier doesnt ask if they have petrol and they have just filled up but say pay for a mars bar, they can legally walk away without paying.
Its goes down on the shift sheet as cashier error and the police wont do anything at all.
Once someone has done it to you once, it doesnt happen again!

Its only £40.

It's £40 from the 95 Billon or so that Shell must be making globally, somehow I think that you are going to be able to sleep at night.
How does the value of the theft suddenly change wrong into right?

I would go back and pay.

At my local esso, when i pay for my dads say pump whatever it is and know the amount he put in and what im paying!!

I dont mind say if you have to "steal"......taking a tube off the shelf at work for my bike cause its 7.30pm im a few miles away from home,no money or mobile to pay for it,dads at work and i work there so staff discount ;) .

Go in and pay for it and you will probably make somebody in the place realise that there is actually nice and honest people in this world! If somebody walked out from my work without paying for their bike because i forgot to print out the receipt then i would blame them as they know they had more to pay to it and it may come back to them when they have no warranty, cant bring the bike back to get fixed etc etc. A bit different in your case cause you used your card but it would be pretty easy to do,you dont know till your statement comes in :o

Ooooh personal is it :p

Sticks and stones.......

You must be in a good mood or is that normal?

The "what a freak" comment was not aimed at you, it was supposed to be an ironic pop at the OP for having the honesty to go back and pay for something he was not charged for, though I can see how it was misinterpreted.

I hate having to explain stuff :p

One thing though, all these "I went in to buy a sandwich and they didn't charge me for the petrol" people: A) Didn't you say you had fuel of did you expect them to go Derren Brown on you and read your mind and B) didn't you hear them say £2 or whatever instead of £30+

Just a slip of the mind, everyone does it, how many times do you walk into the kitchen and forget what you went in for?

I drove off without paying for my petrol once... I didn't even go into the shop!

I'd got a bit distracted... drove about 3 miles down the road and then realised my mistake... I went straight back and paid up, it was so embarassing, but the guy who took the money saw the funny side after he'd told the police I'd come back! :)

never pay cash at petrol stations, if you do get a reciept, its too easy for the cashier to pocket the cash and report you as a drive off it happend to my mate and he ended up paying for his fuel twice just to get the police of his back cos they didnt believe him eventhough the amount he drew out of the petrol stations cash machine was the same as the fuel

Hmmm I personally would go back an pay BUT I would also ask to speak to the manager and tell him that the cashier didn't bother asking if you had filled up or not (even though you are in a petrol station and he/she saw you filling up).

That way you have done the honest thing of paying (correcting your mistake) and gave the silly cashier a ticking off. :)
